Every state appears to have there own rules on the subject of Grey Water.regulations.I think a lot of this dumping of grey water is a kind of issue brought on by self interest groups. To allow exclusive use of sites, by certian exclusion to others. As long as one chooses phosphate free cleaners and disinfectants the amount of damage to the enviroment is ziltch. If one is storing Grey water, don't store it for more than a few hrs or as microbes will thrive in it.So to my way of thinking storing grey water can be more detrimental to the enviroment than putting water into a 20lt bucket/ drum or running it from your hose with a piece of muslin clothsecured at the end of hose and moving it around at different times to water our parched land...Upnorth in c/ parks where there is no sulage and you are asked to lay your hose on the grass , is the reason the grass is green, it isn't because the c/ park owner waters it, as he hasn't got the water to water it.....

Hi everyone
We went looking at vans yesterday. Yes, again. The sales person told us that he heard there is a new law coming in that anyone who free camps must have a grey water tank. Has anyone heard of this or know when it might be rule?
Thanks
Vic
Sounds to me like he is trying to upsell. We carry an empty 20l plastic drum to carry our waste water away in and have never had a problem. How would tenters get on if they had to have a grey water tank fitted?
If I was looking at a new van I would definitely consider a grey water tank as we have camped in a number of places that are " self contained vehicle only" but its just another item for consideration.
Along with Sat dish on the roof, along with a Wingard TV aerial, separate shower and toilet, or combined, Lemair washing machine 2.2Kg or front loader, sola how many panels?, 2 spare tyres on the back bumper, 3rd water tank for longer free camping in the bush, compressor frig with more sola or 3way Frig, single or bigger 2 door frig, Gas/elect Surburban Hot water 24Lt system or the 11lt alternative ( no anode required) Noisey roof top air conditioner or split system similar to domestic models, Diesel or Gas Air Heater, Rear camera, Rollout Awning type, Front boot or tunnel, max Payload in the caravanm for your current/future vehicle, and, and. and.
If I was getting a new caravan I would go for a grey water tank , It would only be the weight of the tank which would not be very heavy, the grey water which you would becarrying would only be the displaced water from your fresh water tank , Has time move on you will limit to where you can free camp unless you are self contained
But surely if you add a grey water tank, you have to take one of the drinking water tanks away. I would definitely use a bucket to catch grey water, I use only Eco cleaners, and emptying a bucket is going to so much easier than storing a heavy grey water tank under the van until you can find a place to empty it.
I honestly can't see how they can enforce it, unless tents and swags have built in grey water tanks...
The sales person said that he heard it at the caravan and camping show in Melbourne that it was going to be brought in as a law for free camping. He did say he didn't know when but apparently it was talked about. If this is the case surely the manufacturers would be aware and begin including grey water tanks. They may not add any weight but they will greatly reduce the storage for fresh water.
