Analogue telly

G'day yawl. I was seriously considering tossing my 7" mini analogue telly (wide screen) I bought 4 or 5 years ago for about 200 bucks. Thilly me! But on impulse last night I checked eBay for mini set top boxes and found a brand new one for $25 including postage. It's the perfect size for the mini telly and has saved it from being trashed. It's also perfect for my camper cos it takes up very little space. The telly lives again, folks! And it was a helluva lot cheaper than buying a new digital telly.

Just thought I'd pass this on in case anyone else out there is thinking of trashing a perfectly good analogue telly.

Hi Gary

I don't know if you are a pensioner , but I had a letter from the government this week saying they will supply them free of charge that's the set top box of course and come and fit it if you can't do it yourself, I forget when it starts.

You're right, Lance - free set top boxes for pensioners. But my guess is they'd be the big ones for a standard telly. This one is a little dude for little tellies. Anyway, the deed is done. But thanks anyway!

Have already had my free one supplied and fitted some weeks ago and they are quite a big box.  You can get all the digital channels on it but no recording facility with it.  Once they swich off the analogue system your VCR will only be good for viewing tapes you already have.

Unless of course you connect it to a set top box as well. But tapes are old technology anyway and most set top boxes these days can record to a USB stick.

12 months ago we had the gov set top box supplied and fitted what a cheap crappy thing it was. Spent $30 for a good one and called them to take theirs back...still here boxed up confuse

$25 for a mini box is good. I was lucky as a mate was throwing out a 19" digital lcd tv with built in recorder as the power pack was bust... I snipped the adapter off and it runs real nice on 112v ...he said keep it and bought a new one...........and I scored an old western dvd as wellbiggrin.  not too proud to take hand me downs pension only goes so far.

When digital TV first started, I spent $500 for a good one!!!! I also have one of the last HD picture tube televisions made by Sony. It weighs 89 kilos, so it wont be stolen in a hurry....

Being an early adopter of new technology has cost me a fortune over the years, but I can't afford to do it now

The one (Set Top Box) we got free from the Government has no facilities for recording or connecting a VCR.  I will soon be getting another Set Top Box with rcording facilities.

Hi ,I got a top box today, Topfield -TBF- 100 HD for $39 from Joyce Mayne. Reduced from $ 69, 12 volt / 240. Only one thing I don't understand , USB PVR Ready (USB Sold Separatly) ,I was told that you can put a USB stick in it and then play it back , it does not work for me ,maybe I got it wrong.

Cheers Hans

USB PVR ready means it can be used as a Personal Video Recorder (PVR) using either a USB memory stick, or in some cases an external Hard Drive connected to the USB port on the device. When you look through the menus you will find one area that allows you to set up a record program provided you have a compatible USB device connected to the STB.
