If you are thinking of going this way - check at Bright Visitors Info Centre or the RTA site - the road to Hotham may be closed in daylight hours, allowing workers to clean up after fires.
Can go through Mount Beauty and through Falls Creek, though, and the road through Mount Hotham is open from 4.30PM till 8.30Am, apparently.

I'm hoping to get to Bright and further in June. Like to get into the snow again. Any idea if there is snow at Bright in winter or any area close by ? Problem with snow of course is whether we can pass thru on the roads in a single axle drive and whether chains are required. Now I note you are in Orbost. If you wish to free camp, the short distance to Marlo will give you several sites suitable for overnight stop on the right side of the road on the Snowy River. Stayed in the area for around a week around this time last year. Friends stayed at the Caravan Park at Marlo, rate was $25.00 a nite, but if you paid for 3 nites, you get the fourth free. Happy times !!

Hi BG - there won't be snow in Bright in June I wouldn't think, but it is only 54k or so from the snowline - Harrietville is a good place closer to Mt Hotham, and the road will be open by then. We have moved on from Orbost - now in Eden for 10 days - unless we get tired of the area and move further north. We stayed in Orbost at the caravan park - nice park, walk to town and $25 per night. Enjoy your travels -!!

Hi Jules and thanks for the advice. As I'm suffering from Old Timer's Disease, I have carefully filed the info on my trusty laptop. Hopefully I'll be able to get into the area you mentioned.. Currently in Melbourne and heading off for Green Lake next Monday. Orbost is a nice town. I noticed the Caravan Park, very large, but decided to stay on the river bank overnite as fishing was the name of the game at Marlo... Have fun...
