Just arrived here. Unfortunately there is no campground closed sign before you drive down to what used to be the campground. WOW What a massive track that river made through what used to be the campground in the recent floods. Of course being overseas & missing all that we didn't know or think there would be a problem there. Luckily we have found a small area near the old bridge where we can spend the night but have had to take the Suzuki off the rear of M/H so as to be able to back out & around to get out tomorrow morning.
Hello Alice & Keith Were there last year and at least 80 vans on the top park and the same on the bottom park over the river,it was a great stop, so what is the top park like at present ?? Good to have you back Ken
Hi, We didn't actually into the area on the high northern bank but from the this side it looks ok & there seems to be plenty of vehicles parked up there. Keith was just just talking to a local & he said the flooding happened about a month ago & the river level was actually up to the top of the high northern bank & the toilets up on the high part on the southern side were under water. The mind boggles. Good to be back in Oz for a while & 'on the road' but on 13th July we head off onn the high seas again for a 90 day cruise - going up through the Suez Canal & hitting all ports in the Mediterrean.
We have happy memories of the Calliope River camping area. We were there a few years ago and had one of the best Happy Hours ever, it's hard to believe that the toilets up the top were under water. It was a great camp and hopefully will eventually recover from the damage. Enjoy your cruise Kandagal, safe journey. Cheers, Annie
We are based in Glady at the moment ,and with all the damage around this area re the floods , Callipope river rest area is the last thing on the councils list of fixer uppers .They recon the bridge will never get repaird. You will have to just come in from either end now.
