wireless internet is all I can get at home too so it makes no diff whether I'm travelling, but I'm still stumped as to why my old Samsung flip phone gives me better reception (whether used as a phone or an internet modem) than the new 4G modem provided by telstra. Telstra is not the cheapest, but does give the best coverage so where you plan to travel may influence or limit your choices. I believe you can also get a block of extra download to add to your mobile phone, so that you don't have to have separate internet connection.

Hi All, I m just wondering what to do about mobile Internet . My hubby and I will be packing up and hitting the road for at least a couple of years and we will definitely need Internet access somehow. Its very expensive to get a monthly phone plan with a big data allowance and we both have iPhones and a laptop each. Living on a limited income means we need a cheaper alternative if there is one. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Cheers GRD

Telstra Wi-Fi+USB dongle is apparently on sale through Coles or KMart for $39, with 5gb - about half price - have one and works well (paid full price).

I use a second phone as a modem for prepaid from Aldi/Kogan. Phones are cheap or you may know someone who has a spare. There are plenty of people with these lying around.

The mobile modems are another option but make sure you purchase one that uses the Telstra network for the best coverage. Some mobile modems allow the fitment of an external antenna. I ran this setup with external antenna with the Optus network. Using the external antenna gave 4 bars against no bars without. The antenna can be purchased off Ebay. They look like a smaller TV antenna. The antenna/modem will pull in signal better than the phone.

If you are staying in towns, mostly you would be right for reception with the phone as a mobile.

What's Telstra up to they don't give anything away unless there's an up side for them
