Just saw a headline in a WA newspaper describing a 66 year old driver as "elderly". Wot? I'm 68 and I certainly don't think of myself as elderly. They say the definition of old is anyone 10 years older than you are. Anyway, I often refer to myself as an old bloke, and am quite happy with being one, but elderly? I've always associated "elderly" with frail and bent. Must've been a young reporter who wrote that newspaper headline. Elderly indeed!
I don't think that 66 is elderly either. I don't really associate an age with the term elderly. As you say, it's more a look of frail and slow on their feet, or slow in the mind.
I'm 58 and sometimes I feel old, but I if it were someone besides myself saying they were 58, I wouldn't think of them as old. If that makes sense.
Yep, depends on the person. I phoned my old bro who's 80 and his wife answered. She said he was up on the roof of the house fixing something. He also rides a bicycle every day and works 3 days a week as a hairdresser. I believe age has more to do with the way a person thinks than anything chronological.
I was ones asked why I was listening to Rock & Roll , I told them just because I am over 70 I don't have to listening to Brahms ,Mozart ,or Hayden. Think jung and you stay jung.
Somebody said to me recently that 70 is the new 50 (I think that's how it goes), but I like the saying that age is just mind over matter - if you don't mind, it doesn't matter. Annie
Just have a look at the age of some of the Grey Nomads on here - Yeoeleven is 76 - started travelling at 74 - others we have met are in their 80's, and not only motorhoming, but overseas travel as well!!!!!

Akshully, my mother who was 84 when she died pronounced it 'eldery'. She also hated animal cruelty and reckoned offenders should be reported to the NRMA.
In nearly 50 years as a (mainly) newspaper journalist, "elderly" always irritated me. As a sub-editor (the one who changes the reporter's story and turns it into English) I always just took the word out (the power of being able to perform such acts more than made up for the horrible, antisocial hours we worked!).
Later this year, God willing and weather permitting, I will be 70. I do NOT regard that as elderly.
Cheers, Tony

I think the word "Elderly" is out of date. I can't think of a replacement word, in fact should there be any descriptive word for our age. I'm coming up 72 and apart from a few aches and pains, I'm still quite active. My Dad passed away at 82, my Mom at 92 so I guess the precedent gives me a chance for a few more years before I fall off the perch!!

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
What about replacing elderly with mature or experienced...
My 16yr old daughter just asked me why we don't like being called elderly...meaning you lot as well :) ....I told her its like someone calling her a kid or child, even though she is a young adult. I don't mind tell my age but I don't like the descriptive "elderly" word....you already know the man is 66 what more should you say?
In my first job, one of my workmates was having a baby at 28. I can still recall thinking "how old is she, to be having a baby!!" I think I was 15. Old is 15 years older than you are! My mum was 87 but was never "elderly"
While reflecting about ancient photos of our teenage footballing days with a mate late last year I wondered aloud what had happened to the us & who were those young, good looking guys looking back at us. He simply commented that "they don't make mirrors like they used to". How true. Since I no longer get asked for my pension/ seniors card for ID, & am on first name basis with my doctors & specialists, & all the embarrassing mistakes & trouble we got up to in less mature times are now humorous in hindsight, I feel I am getting old, elderly, ancient, whatever you like. I figure I should just get on with things, I am reliably told you are a long time dead.

travelling on a train in Perth some young chaps(14-15 maybe) were swearing and using course language. An older fellow (maybe 30) said "cut the language fellas, show some respect, there are elderly people on this train". Looking around the carriage we realised he was referring to us as we were the oldest people there - all of 57 and 60. Still laugh about it.
