Just a quick post. I never got the impression that the original poster was asking to do any against the rules or cheat the system. I'm interpreting it as that they're asking if it's OK to do something like that.

Me personally, I don't see an issue if a person asks to stay there. They'll either get a yes or a no, or a yes but please donate a small coin or something like that. It's only when someone tries to cheat the system that I get annoyed.

I do not know what state you are from or where you are right now, In QLD it is illegal to use a dedicated truck stop if you are not in a truck.  And really why should people use these parking stops if they are not in a truck ..The poor truck drivers have a dead line to meet as they are working ,and do not need us camped in there parking places,.

We are from SA, but we have been through VIC and NSW and from what Les has said it's the same, he drove road trains up north into NT and still it was the same rules. So may be QLD is the only state that has this law. I have never heard of it.

As for the truckers getting some sleep...what has this got to do with staying there...I don't know of hardly any campers who are loud and noisy when stopping for a rest. For us we love the peace and quiet, so we never make any noise. In fact I have known many truck drivers to be more inconsiderate to other people in the rest stops than campers.

I think the point was more about taking up their space, not really about noise and disturbing them. Either way, it's all a bit off topic as the original post was about staying at petrol stations and showering.

Snip......"the reason it has the picture of a truck or truck stop on the sign is that trucks are able to get into them....the ones that have a picture of a truck with a line through them means that trucks can't get into it.

Les (a truck driver for 48 years) and I have always used rest stops on the side of the road as its for EVERYONE." Snip......

Perhaps the thing here is for everyone to use a bit of common sense and common courtesy, if you have a small rig pull up in smaller stops if possible or if they are available near your stopping point, and leave the larger bays to trucks, larger caravans or 5th wheelers unless you have no choice at that point in time.   That is not to say "don't" use them, but if possible be considerate of others who may not be able to pull into the smaller stops...hmm

By the same token, smaller rigs that do use the larger bays should not be abused or scowled at, there may be any number of reasons they have pulled up there (eg: not feeling well, too tired to drive further, nodding off, vehicle or caravan problems etc, etc....)
