Nissan Patrol - Noises???

If it is a 4.2td model then it is a normal occurrence. The gearbox growls when the vehicle is going very slow just keep the revs above 1,000rpm and it should disappear.

The 4.2 td has a truck gearbox and transfer case developed a long time ago.

Has any one experienced a groaning noise (maybe transfer case?), when at low speed, down low and mainly when vehicle been running for some time.

Low speed transfer case growling is very common to the Patrol.

My aeging 1995 GQ Patrol - 4.2 EFI petrol - has long has a transmission noise.

If I don't keep the revs up as I go from 1st to 2nd and maybe from 2nd to 3rd there is a growling noise that is there for a second or so until the revs build up.  It reminded me of the lugging noise that you used to get in older vehicles if pulling away from a corner at low speed in too high a gear.

I could hear it but my passengers usually couldn't.

Anyway it has been there since perhaps around 100,000km and at 260,000km it is certainly no worse.  Most of those Ks were pulling a 2.5ton van.

In fact I may have subconsciously modified my driving habits to the extent that I can't recall when I last heard it.

Hi Dodg and others who have replied,

Yep thats about what we thinking, so thanks for the reassurance everyone.

Do you know why they recommend to use automatic transmission oil in the transfer case.

Seems a bit light?

Cheers

Maccas

I bought my GU TD4.2 with 170K many years ago. It had this same rattle/growl at very low revs.

I drove a late model very low K GU and let the revs drop and yep, there was the growl!

Auto locking hubs? Gear oil creates drag at the front shaft activating the hubs so Nissan recommended auto trans oil. My GU with manual hubs runs gear oil in the transfer.
