The Almighty dollar.

The better half and I recently went down to Geelong to see a practice/friendly match against Collingwood. The Cats won the game by 51points, (Jimbo, take note). When the game finished the winning teams club song was played as per usual. There are two lines in the song that go like this,

Our banners flying high from dawn to dark.

Down at Kardinia Park.

Kardinia Park is the original name of the ground but now we have stadium sponsors who have their name on the stands so what happened to the club song???? They cut it off at the words "Down at...... Wife and I along with nearly everyone in the stadium, were gobsmacked. Now I know that, in the scheme of things, this might appear a trivial matter but to a 50yr Cat member, it was mortifying!!!! I have made my views known at the club in no uncertain terms but I doubt that I'll get a satisfactory reply if I get one at all.! Once big money gets into sport this is the sort of crap that occurs and not just in AFL its everywhere from what I can see.

Regards,

A severely pissed off Magnarc.!

In AFL as well as other codes, plus cricket the mighty $ has a lot to answer for. I dont remember hearing as much about players using banned substances, match-fixing etc before there was so much $ involved.
Footy when we were kids was when the blokes from your town/suburb played against the blokes from another town/suburb. And we cheered like mad for our home-town boys. There wasnt much money, clubs had a stall selling meat pies at the game to raise funds, players werent bought and sold like prize animals, and we all loved the footy and meat pies on a cold Saturday arvo.
Dont even bother watching this rot on TV any more.

Sadly a lot of sport is just games now not sport as I used to know it.  So I have given up on them all, don't watch any, don't barrack for anyone NEVER have a sportsbet anymore, no more footy tipping. Until I am shattered by any of the Paralympians I do follow them....
