Have a look at the device used on this US Chalet folding A shaped van to raise the roof.
Chalet was also made in Oz by Kimberley Camper trailers in Ballina, NSW, and there are a few still around.
I heard that they faced a legal challenge from Avan Australia over copyright infringement and they are not made in Australia anymore, but still a few on the road before this happened. See the link for this US one;
Yes, the UK one made it look like they were constructing a van, not putting one up.
As a lot of UK caravanning is going to one site for long holidays, perhaps for their purposes it is worth it, hate to go through that every few days if on the move though.
Bit more if we muck around, but we can usually have the top up, awning out and chair ready by the time the water's boiled and the tea made.
Once upon a time we used to carry heaps of crap, and it would be stored in the van.... you know, extra chairs, a folding pen for the dogs, extra tables, canvas annex, box of groceries, etc.
Not any more.
Less is best these days, and the more experienced we get the more things change.
I also wouldn't want to have to do that over and over again...I think the novelty would wear out very easily. I like being able to pull off the road, open the van have a cuppa and sit down and enjoy it, not spend each time building a van from scratch...nope not us, we want it easy now...
I also recon it would be no fun erecting them in the rain/ or in stinking hot waether/or at night.Not for either , that is why a pop top was a pain for us.And it was not as much mucking around as these Avan set ups.But everyone to their own and if thats their way of travelling so be it .
Some people don't like towing the full height caravan. I thought the outside was pretty easy, but once I saw the mess inside that you'd have to set up...no, not for me.
Initially it looked like one of those old old vans that pop up very similar...I think they have a solid wall that slides up. I'm sure someone will know which one I mean, I've forgotten the name, even though a friend has one.
