What is a Tombola & Hoy?

The CWA are advertising one here for next Tuesday. I went to a Cent Sale once in Bundy, years ago now. I'm presuming its something similiar.

These must all be Qld events as never heard of them before in Vic or anywhere else.

I will go along to see what its all about but wondered before I get there.

I think Hoy is a game like Bingo? confuse

The only Tombowler I remember was a large sized marble, great for knocking your opponents marbles out of the ring! biggrin

I googled Tombola. Its a type of raffle with numbers drawn continually from a revolving drum. Sounds similiar to the Cent Sale I went to.

Will now google Hoy.

Remember, Google is your friend....

I would have sat for hours trying to remember the name of the young girl singing on a high wire at the Sydney Olympics.

Google: young girl sing 2000 olympics....quick as a flash you get "Nikki Webster"

My late wife loved bingo and once when we were away she decided to go to the local bingo game and won. She came back with a small pocket size pack of tissues. That was in Queensland. Good luck Marj.

Don't know about Hoy, but Bingo is played extensively in WA (no pokies in clubs or RSL's over here, only at the Casino).

I played it at a British Navy establishment in Singapore, was called Tombola there.   Also played at Australian Army bases in NSW where it was called Housy Housy.

Invented by the Italians apparently according to google.

I played Bingo every week back in Echuca/Moama when I lived there. The prizes were good too. Bingo is with numbers. Hoy seems to be with pictures of some sort and when you get a line or a full card you call out Hoy.
Its called Housey in NZ. The first time I played it over here and got a full card I called out House instead of Bingo. Gave everyone a good laugh.

Seems to be very popular, particularly with women, many of whom can play quite a number of coupons at the same time.....and woe betide anyone who sits in someones favorite seat......

Tombola a all ball game from Italy and Hoy is like bingo using playing cards when bingo was not allowed in QLD they would play Hoy for grocers to raise funds for clubs. Both fun games.

I'm too scared to go to Bingo in the local hall for that reason!

Know what you mean. I used to go to the Bingo at Moama RSL. It started at 11am. All chairs were claimed by 10am. They would leave their belongings there and go away for an hour.
I always ended up on the very back table as nobody else wanted it. If you got there early and took someones the glare when they arrived was enough to shrink to the back tables.

And more Doug, most of the regulars know each other and form little groups at the tables, saving seats for others in their group like Marj says by placing things on them etc.....newbies are not very welcome, best to go with a friend who is a regular, they resent anyone winning "their" prizes if you know what I mean.  Not that I was a regular but have been to a few games and observed etc.....

Thats strange gst. When I googled Tombola it said it is a type of raffle. I don't want to go to a ball game.

You got one thing right gst, apparently a version of it started in Italy before it spread to other parts of the world, being modified by some along the way....smile

Ok, found out exactly what they are today from the neighbour who is also going on Tuesday.

They are both a type of raffle the same as a cent sale.
When you walk in the door you buy strips of numbers, either 5 or 10 on a strip for either $5 or $10 eg $1.00 each number.
Numbers are called out from the barrel, if it is your number you hold it up in your hand and call out. They bring you up a prize. And so on.
Morning tea or lunch will be provided.
I have a feeling from the one I went to in Bundy all prizes are donated from local businesses.
I had no idea that the other nearby towns around here hold them all the time.
