With a reception like that, it's a good thing you are leaving town!!!
A lot of guilty consciences there. Where you wearing a Centrelink tshirt ?
I used to sell flowers at a farmers market and was always having photos and videos taken, even had a microphone shoved in my face for a radio station interview. We were a much happier bunch than that lot. Used to spruik for sales, stir up the regular customers and other stall holders.
One lady bought flowers for her husband, I said "This is unusual, wife buying husband flowers?"
Quick as a flash husband said "That's because wife went to ATM and withdrew all husband's money!"

G'day. This morning I decided to shoot a video of the local markets at Taree Showground just for a bit of fun, and to practice my editing. I was hoping to capture some of the local country atmosphere - watermelons and pumpkins and kids and dogs. But it turned rather sour when one stall holder objected to my taking pics. In a public place? At one stage (when I wasn't filming) I thought he was gonna flatten me. Here's the video.
Hey Gary........I don't know what his problem was, people nowadays are very testy about having their faces all over the net, which in one way I can understand, wouldn't want mine there, but it makes you think that a lot of people probably earn a lot of cash money at markets, and don't want anyone to know about it............especially the government or centrelink.
There is a lot of money made out there at markets and not a lot of way of tracking it, that is why you see the same people doing a circut of markets, they all will tell you, where they will be next weekend........but hey, can't really blame them.

Gday...
Whilst the stallholder could have simply asked that you didn't film him - and his stall - perhaps you could/should have firstly approached him and given a brief introduction of yourself and brief background about why/what you were videoing.
I like to think of myself as a photographer, and have been chronicling my wanderings around this country. Don't have a blog but produce a 'newsletter' for anyone interested.
I often want to take photographs of a wide variety of "general activities" with people who don't know me and I don't know. I always introduce myself, let them know why I would like to take photos and give them the opportunity to approve - or disapprove. After all, they have no idea who the hell I am, and what nefarious activities I may be up to.
I would feel a bit perplexed myself if I looked up and saw someone I didn't know pointing a video camera at me without knowing why.
Cheers - John

Hey Gary, even though they were colourfull and different, before ya video or take pics of the local toilets it might be an idea to have a look over ya shoulder to see if any boys in blue are about........you could even (undoubtably) get in trouble for that....It is a shame that we have to be very careful who and what and where we take pics these days... Parents have to be careful where they are when taking pics of their children, in case someone takes offence............what a lot of c rap. Give me the days before Political Correctness, as iy has gotten out of hand..........
We used to have a stall at a market where we sold wrought iron wares and did not like people taking photos because they could then copy our designs.
I used to deliver to a florist in a major shopping centre. She had a sign up telling people not to photograph her arrangements...Probably for the same reason.

I was at the local mall one time, taking photos of a snake and reptile handler. After showing one of the animals to the audience, and explaining its physiology and habitat, he let the kids handle some of the more placid exhibits. Naturally, kids handling reptiles made great photos so I clicked happily away. Next thing, I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was a security guard who asked me to step aside for a moment. Then he explained that a woman in the audience had complained about my taking photographs of children. I was shocked to think that someone could interpret such an innocent activity as having evil intent, and was speechless for a while. For crying out loud, I was in full view of hundreds of people, using a full-blown DSLR camera, not some secretive little compact. Anyway, the security guard didn't take it any further. He was just doing his job by acting on a complaint. It ended up being a storm in a teacup but, nonetheless, was very unsettling. Parents these days can't even take photos of their own kids at a football match without some paranoid do-gooder kicking up a stink. As Sarg says, political correctness has gotten out of hand.
Quite a lot of discussion about photography in public places on the caravaners forum see the recent thread here: [url]http://www.caravanersforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=35797[url]
It would seem that whilst in a public place you can take photos and film just as news crews and photojournalists do without restriction except for defence facilities.
have a look

This country is the greatest..............I used to think but cannot understand where it is headed, and am glad I will not be around when it gets there, SO SAD.
Unfortunately this country is slowly being destroyed by "do gooders" and political correctness....
When the QLD floods were on I listened to emergency radio on the ABC. At the end of his shift, the male announcer thanked the girls for manning the phones. Then he corrected himself and said "Perhaps that should be personning the phones" WTF

This is a topic that I also find interesting .. Privacy is such these days that unless we are behind closed doors in our own habitat, then we are all subject to being photographed at some time ..
A passion of mine is flying a model r/c (motorised) glider .. and have now also purchased a high definition video camera that can be attached to the plane for some beautiful stills or video recordings. Most of the time I'm far too high for it to become an invasion of privacy but it certainly is surprising when you see the quality of the video thats available from such small cameras and it has the capacity to record for at least 1.5 hrs .. There definitely needs to be more explicit rules & regs governing this hobby structured properly before 'negative' elements take advantage of the situation and ruin it for the rest of us that enjoy the hobby ..
Wanna know something scary .. One guy had a setup (FPV) which incorporated a camera on his plane which operated in REAL-TIME .. he sat on a chair with a monitor on a stool in front of him .. and when his plane flew out past his own visual distance, he then simply flew it from the "live" cam that was on the plane .. With (2) other guys (using similar equipment) to share control from different locations, they flew the plane over 25 kms from the launch field and back .. the onboard GPS recorded the flight-path, height and speed .. This was all done out in the boondocks, so that is some consolation .. but .. somewhat mind-boggling eh !

Military technology filtering down to the man in the street...
The US Predator drones can be flown out of a shipping container anywhere in the world...The pilot lives in Las Vegas, drives to work in the desert, and flys a plane in the Middle East somewhere, launching smart bombs. They fly so high with small engines, that the target doesn't even know they are there....

So what difference should it make whether shooting a few pics or a video at the local markets or even at the beach, compared to the 24/7 cameras that operate in our streets and shopping complexes and corner shops.......Ok you can say it is for Traffic Control, local break ins and for detecting Shopplifters..........but how many inocent young children are being caught on film? THIS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED, WE HAVE OUR RIGHTS..... ok I'm off my soapbox. Rules for some.....Sarg.
There is a bit of 'small minded' mentality around though. That's life. A few years ago I detoured through a town to take a photo of a street where I spent some childhood years between farms. New white vehicle and we were neat and casually dressed, so nothing odd or untoward about us.
I parked legally and hopped out to take a photo of the intersection looking down the suburban street, unchanged since I was a kid. The paint was even the same. I was fiddling with the new camera for a few minutes when suddenly a wild harridan emerged from the lone general store on the diagonal corner. She was purple like her robe and incensed that I was taking photos. Abusive and suspicious of strangers. Yep, the 'burb was still the same and some traditions never change. Any wonder there was no change and no business growth in over fifty years.
I on purpose NEVER take a photo with anyone in it.
When I am in a gathering etc the cameras stay in the bus. I am a passionate photographer but I now restrict my self to scenery, birds, animals, insects and flowers. I used to do a lot of portrait and friends weddings etc but now keep the camera well hidden when anyone is about.
Even when my partner had a grand daughter they were paranoid about me taking photos of the new baby as they may fall into the wrong hands. I gave them a copy and then deleted them from the camera and made sure I kept no copies.
Even the father was not allowed to hold the baby in fear of abuse calls and he was not permitted to watch her being bathed.
The females went out and left me in charge and they hit the roof when they came home and the father had the baby (weeks old) on his lap.
When the bathing procedure started he was ordered out of the room, I saw red and walked in with him grabbed the grandmother and removed her from the room and told her that they should as a family (Mum and Dad) learn to bath and care for the child on their own. Was not a popular boy for a while till I explained that the father needed to and was entitled to be part of rearing their daughter.
I come from the old school I suppose where both parents are involved in the up bringing and that there is nothing taboo as far as what a particular sex can or should do in that upbringing. I have changed many a poo nappy and made bottles and fed the kids at night etc. it is usually me that soothes the crying kids and settles them down as I seem to have the touch or something and kids always settle for me. Might be the BO or something or just they are too scared to cry when I have them.
Wish we could go back 40 years but it will only get worse.
Regards Brian
