Depends what the mother has been exposed to I guess. In the 1930's well-meaning nursing staff would sprinkle DDT! into peoples beds! DDT is a poison that accumulates in our bodies over many years and has been found in mothers milk, along with lots of other toxins. I think the experts ended up deciding mothers milk was still better for baby??
Oh crikey Gerty. Why DDT in the beds. Was it to kill bed bugs?
Yes! I was told this story by an elderly lady who was a nurse before WW2.. she said they did it in the maternity ward too! DDT used to be the wonder cure for all bugs and creepy crawlies.
It is always good to keep up-to-date with what scientists etc consider will kill us. However, I recall during the 1960s it was stated that we should remove potatoes from our diet because they had so much starch and very little else to provide nutriment - they just contribute to making us fat.
By the mid 90s it was determined that potatoes are one of the vegetables essential to our diet in that they provide considerable value to a well-balanced diet.
Having said that - it is good to know there are those who are constantly testing and researching on our behalf.
Reverting to the article from the BBC, it does state -
"The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a part of the World Health Organization, had previously labelled diesel exhausts as probably carcinogenic to humans.
IARC has now labelled exhausts as a definite cause of cancer, although it does not compare how risky different carcinogens are. Diesel exhausts are now in the same group as carcinogens ranging from wood chippings to plutonium and sunlight to alcohol."
and - "The impact on the wider population, which is exposed to diesel fumes at much lower levels and for shorter periods of time, is unknown."
and - "But director of cancer information Dr Lesley Walker said the overall number of lung cancers caused by diesel fumes was "likely to be a fraction of those caused by smoking tobacco"."
The World Health Organisation had stated - "It based the findings on research in high-risk workers such as miners, railway workers and truck drivers." I guess not many of us ordinary folk have a high-risk occupation in this regard.
The group of carcinogens that diesel fumes has been included within include cigarette ash in an ashtray.
The one thing to keep firmly in the front of our minds is that life is finite - live it NOW before it passes you buy worrying about everything.

I remember years ago hearing that hair dye caused cancer. Well my brain must be cooked. I used it from age 16 (roughly) till just over a year ago, so thats around 45 years.
