Motorhome Insurance

Hi all - we are looking at purchasing a Motorhome and 'doing the big trip'.   However, one problem I have encountered is getting a quote for insurance - with all these ads on TV promising you this and that you would think one company would give you a quote on insuring say a $100,00 vehicle - no way.   I have found they all want to know what you eat for breakfast, when you last broke wind etc etc before they will tell you anything so is there anyone out there who can give me some idea on the premium for a vehicle costing approx $100,000.   Cheers

Too funny. But it's true. Sometimes it's just so hard to get a direct answer. That's even if you can speak to another human, some of these companies make you go through 5 minutes of voice prompts before you get type of service.

I just joined CMCA and had quote for $200 less than anyone else, for a Mercedes Sprinter motorhome. Worth a look.

Hi Terry,

The CMCA insurance is done through Ken Thame and you have to become a member.

If I recall correctly it's $60 to join and $40 yearly to be eligble to get the insurance, but don't quote me.

With that you also get 12 copies of their inhouse magazine ( The Wanderer) which in my opinion is around what you would pay for an anual subscription to a magazine anyway.

I have a motorhome around the $150K mark and my insurance is $840 ish from memory.

I also have a Suzuki which I flat tow behind my motorhome and also insure through KT.

I have had two claims on the Suzuki in the last two years, one a broken windscreen and the other was body damage to the rear drivers side plastic mouldings and rear plastic bumper after a tyre blow out.

All handled with courtesy and speed. I would recomend them from my own experience.

With the motorhome the list of benefits is worth looking at for what they offer.

Others will give you their list as well so hopefully you will find one that suits your needs.

Try using the search facility and see if you get other recomendations also.

Cheers

Trevor

My MH insurance is up for renewal soon, last year I joined the CMCA and insured through Ken Tame, this year I got a quote from APIA, very competitive, so let the CMCA membership lapse and will go with APIA.

CMCA was of absolutely no benefit to me, the monthly magazine (The Wanderer) is little more than a mag full of advertorials, the only reason I joined in the first place was to gain access to their forum, a few months after I joined they closed the forum down.

I used to be with CMCA and KT but after two claims. One I broke a fan belt and needed assistance as I was up in the mountains and I lost my power steering , my brakes and my cooling and they only offered to pay part of the towing and I had to find someone to get me off the mountain and find a repairer, the other my trailer (also insured through KT) snapped the A frame and they refused to help as they said it was not an accident and therefore not covered. They insure to your value for the first two years and then after that it is to their value, so I expected a drop in insured value but the rate was going to be up quite a bit so dropped the cover and when the forum closed down I also dropped my membership to CMCA.

No not insured but looking for some cover just for basics.

Regards
Brian

I'm no great lover of KT Brian, however, both of the incidents you refer to are mechanical not accidental, I wouldn't have expected them to be covered by insurance.

As GD commented, surely you have third part property!

I recently tried to insure my Hiace campervan for the first time. Joined CMCA and KT quoted $1080 since this is my first Insurance and therefore no noclaim bonus

I eventually went with Apia at $690 and at an agreed value. Their policy looked just as good as the CMCA policy. However, don't know how they react when a claim is made.

They are very easy and pleasant to deal with. Anyway that was my experience.

SoloSteve, your blog is always very interesting to read and your pic's are awsome.I enjoy reading your blog as you write it as you see it, not affraid to say how you see a certain place through your eyes. Some blog writters never mention a lot of how they really see things or how they feel about a certain place. And when i read them i do think hey come on every thing on the road or places you visit is just hunky do,As i say life is not a bed of roses ,so on the road is no different. Good one day and can be crap the next. But the best part of living on the road , if it is crap you just move on.Was going to leave you a message vis your latest blog report ,but there was no section at the end to leave one .Are you heading to Lightning Ridge ?

Thank you for the kind words Herbie, I am chuffed that you enjoy my blog. I try to put some thought into it as I don't want to just write a travelogue. Living on the road full time is

a real adventure for me and I want to try and share that with others. I have recently resurrected the blog with some new posts after a layoff of a couple of months, I hope that

you will continue to read. I appreciate any suggestions or criticism that may make it better or more interesting. You can leave a comment at the end of a post or email me if you

want to discuss a post further.

Steve
