Don't have to pay to be a member of any of the Forums I'm on. Used to be a CMCA member, but didn't re-join, as I don't like the Politicking that goes on there.
The only benefit would be discounts at Caravan Parks, and as I prefer to Free-camp, useless to me.
Cheers,
Sheba.

That sounds like a good idea to me(the twelve month thingo ).Why do people join a forum like this if they do not put any input into it.Just my thought on this matter.Like clubs i guess some only join a certain club to get what they wont/ need from it ,but never put any effort into it when the hard yards are needed.I was reading where they recon there is 75.000 travellers on the road , I am sure that would not be all at the same time.

G'day On the subject of membership, are there many members of the nomads that are payed up members of other groups like CMCA or Aus caravan club or other like groups ??? and do they see a benifit in joining these groups and why the difference between or the limitation of joining members depending on what home on wheels they have.
Do we all need to get on board at least one of these groups as numbers count to use it as a tool to push for our best interest as nomads???
I am a member of many forums ranging from ham radio to pinball. This forum has by far the quickest response time (with useful information) and the least angry posters......

We might have almost 5000 members but how many who are actively involved?
Don't know......I saw on another forum, if a new members hasn't posted in 12 months their membership is deleted.
Thats a bit unfair Duh. I saw a 1st time post yesterday on here, checked to see info on the new member and found she had joined nearly 12 months ago but only just posted for the first time.
I was just commenting on an earlier post that brought that subject up, I did not indicate that I was in favour or not of the other forums policy. Whether it is fair or not is the decision and policy of the owners of that other forum. Thankfully it does not happen here.
I have always welcomed new members here whether they post or not.
In regards to numbers on this forum, they are also a guide to those who wish to advertise on The Grey Nomads as to how many members would be reading the forum, not to mention visitors, so it is unlikely that Cindy would be concerned whether they posted or not, although she certainly encourages members to participate and supports those who do.
Agree about the privacy Gerty, we have no idea of who most other members are as anyone can join while most do not post so very limited info about them if any.

We are CMCA members and still find the benefits are worthwhile .
I was a member for 12 months but let it lapse. They put out a quality magazine as you know each month that is free to members and sent to each all covered by your membership, that alone more than pays for the reasonable membership per year. Also gives cheap RV insurance while a member.
This subject come up from time to time , I can't what the problem is with having members who just gather information from the forum and don't take part , have you thought what this forum would be like if 5000 member all wanted to have there say .
I too don't have any problem with lurkers or lapsed members.
Some people join for a short time, and wander off, but there is no way to "revoke" your membership. Maybe we should all have to rejoin after one or two years, to stop the membership forever growing- if its a problem.
As for joining other paid groups, well, we have a poptop not an MV or 5th wheeler etc, so some groups don't want us. We don't want to get on the end of a convoy and spend time with a large group of people. We stay where we please, so other groups don't want us either.
I've had my time being politically active and fighting for stuff.
There's nothing I want anymore, just fling some food in the van and point me towards a nice quiet spot.
I would think if membership was a problem Cindy would do something about it . I have never heard Cindy raise any issue with number on the forum and she is the one doing the management of it , When I join the forum I didn't comment till I felt I had something to say that could help not just to have a chat , We now have I Digress for the have a chats

No problem with me if members don't post. They will still be reading and learning and will post if they have a question or a comment to be made. The more the merrier.
While welcoming every new member, I urge everybody to be mindful of their privacy and security.
Our posts on the forum are available to the whole world if they want to look. Our profiles are available to 5000 people now. For example: if you post a photo with your number plate readable, and/or your full name in your profile its easy to be found. Later when you post that you are travelling away from home, your home could easily be burgled.
Always amuses me how we have a username, yet some on here will write the personal name of the person they are speaking to. Doesn't worry me personally, I'm Marj and everyone knows it but we might have used our personal name in the beginning to save the confusion. I use the username on here but if on facebook or email for example speaking to the same person will use their real name.
I agree HW. I use username (as much as I can) when posting and use the person's real name if PMing. As Gerty says, take care, the forum now has many members and many people from many different countries reading what we post. Just have fun without shedding info on people's private information. And it is great when we get to meet some of those people who have been posting. As Jules47 says, it feels as if they are already friends.
And as vk6tnc says, this forum has a very quick response time to posts and queries. It doesn't stagnate.
I wonder how many of those 5000 members have either fallen of the perch or no longer look at the forum (no longer into the RV lifestyle etc) and have never de-registered themselves
I suppose the forum with the 12 month posting rule (fair or not) would have a better idea of how many actual members are still on the forum.
Without scrolling through the whole membership here to see when a person last viewed the forum other than as a visitor, I wonder if there is any automated way to see if they are still around (read viewing the forum) or have moved on.
I suppose you could click on their name and see when they last viewed on the site and when they last wrote on the site. That would be the only way I can think of. I belong to a few other forums and haven't been on them for so long, I suppose I should go check them out.
I think most forums have far more non-active members than active members. Talk back radio is the same. Most people are happy just to be entertained or informed without participating. I'm a chatterbox so it's easy for me.

Thinking more of those who no longer view the forum at all Gary, I am probably registered on a few that I never visit anymore, some don't have an unsubcribe bit on their forum and you need to contact the site to be removed, I'd hazard a guess that a lot probably don't bother.
Here's an interesting one. Just found a registered member who is viewing now. Didn't think I had seen the name before so clicked on his profile. He joined February 10th 2010 and has never posted. Welcome to you.
