Hello everyone, have just read this police report regarding two German tourist's terrifing experiance 20/2/2012..last wed / night while camped at Ellery Creek Big Hole in west Mac,Donald Ranger's National Park.NT. The attack was carried out by a gang of four thugs hurling rocks smashing window's in the camper van ,while the two tourists were inside the van.The thugs then took off with a number of items they stole from these poor people. The attack took place between 5pm and 6pm.....What is this country coming to ? I just checked and yes i have the base ball bat under the bed but from now on it will be beside the fridge when i am free camping. So another reason i guess to camp around where other people are camped as we can look out for each others well being .Do not want to alarm any one regarding this ,but better to know that they are out there than not knowing

Regards Herbie

I think its time to bring back the gun and the cat and nine tails and sett up an island prison surrounded by white points

we could build a large canal around and only keep the sharks hungary.

forgot no TVs or phones or computers and send all the do goodes there as lovers.

You don't have to be a camper to be attacked by thugs. The mongrels don't care who their victims are. I read a comment one time from travellers who said they never free camp anywhere near a town on a Friday night because of "high spirited" youth out to party. I live in a corner house not far from a pub and Friday nights are always trouble. I've had my fence damaged on a couple of occasions with several panels replaced, and the letter box kicked in. The cops are never around when such things occur.

I think its a shame to have to form groups in such beautiful wide-open spaces. Part of experiencing the desert is to feel the isolation.

Yes that is the incident i was refering to..As Garry mentioned in his post you can be attacked any where, but the differance getting treated in this way away from town or city is a lot more frightening and threatning .As some times you could be the only person in that area for miles, and if these type of low life hurt you or stole your mode of transport, you cannot yell for help or walk to the nearest police station.I have al got into the habbit of keeping a spear set of all keys hide in the van for this very reason. If in a motor home keep them in your pocket or bum pack.

I do not know any more than what was in the police report. but at 49 and 51 years of age one would not think that very unlikely. There is a web page some one posted on here to read about it.

I agree, Gerty Dancer... I'm looking forward to the experience of isolation in the desert with nothing but the stars and the silence.

Would these two tourists' be the two back packers that gave the Park Ranger a mouth full prior to the event, but not before tossing a truck load of expletives at the aboriginal boys?

Not 100% sure of the facts, but there are stories and where there is smoke there is usually fire.

It's an isolated incident, your far more likely to be involved in a traffic accident while on your travells than an attack of this nature.wink

It's a sketchy secondhand story I got from a young couple who said they were in Alice at the time.  Maybe you can check the facts while in Alice.

Where are you staying in Alice, we hope to head up there next month.  Last time we stayed at the G'Mate Caravan Park and found it ticked all the boxes.
