Tourelite camper-trailer

We are an elderly and not too physicaly fit couple using a Tourelite trailer and though quite happy with a couple of trips we have had there are small worries we would be happier if we could solve. Has anybody out there fitted some sort of safety rail on the bed in one of these trailers, to alleviate the fear of falling out during the night. I would be grateful if a suggestion or two come in with basic instructions so I may be able to rectify this problem. Our only other hassle was climbing into the bed but we may have solved this one with a step. It appears to be trial and error so far as we have bought a few and each has good points and bad. Hoping some handy camper may be able to give us a tip or two.

Hi and welcome oakforddavo. Some wonderful people here may be able to help.

There is also a very friendly Yahoo group, their webpage link below. What they don't know about campertrailers, I doubt anyone does.

You can get a range of bed rails from the mobility aid type shops. They are held in place by sliding under the mattress.

It's a new one on me, bit hard for some to give advice without seeing a pic of the camper, but as jetj said maybe you can get some info of the link she provided above.

Is this the type of camper you have?

Our camper trailer is the Tourelite " getaway plus"  and more info is available on Google - try " tourelitetrailers". They are situated in Canningvale. Perth. It is lightweight so able to be towed by a small car but is very strongly manufactured. There seem to be great numbers of these type of units on the market but most are much more costly than ours. We have done a few trips so far down south and have found it very succesful but for the couple of things I am trying to rectify. We hope to be doing a long haul to the east later in the year so I hope bto solve these minor problems before that.

 I had put the link to what I assume is the maker of your trailer on a previous post, however you are showing an "e" after Tour in Tourlite which I think is throwing people off, that is you are showing Tourelite instead of Tourlite.  Here is the link to the Tourlite Getaway Plus;

http://www.tourlitetrailers.com.au/trailers/camper-trailers/getaway-plus/

I don't have one myself but maybe someone does and is able to help with your bed problem.

yes you have me there - I did have an "e" where it shouldnt be. Put it down to my unfamiliarity with all this modern technology and my nervousness due to lack of computer usage. Thanks for help anyway. Nice know so many helpful folk are around.

No worries OFD, did you read this post from Pam, they might help.  Also maybe pose the question on that link jetj put on her post.

What are the other problems you have with it, could you explain them please, they might be generic problems that someone here might have an answer for.

Please keep posting here and don't be nervous, you are very welcome, we all had to start somewhere!  I see you are a sandgroper, we do have the occasional meet up now and then so keep your eye on posts.   Tony D has a camper trailer (or did) so he may be able to help also.

I must warn you though about one of our Sandgropers called Wombat, don't let him into your back yard unless you want it ruined!

Wombat better not come near my backyard - the dog would have him for breakfast. thhe problems we had were only two - getting into the raised bed and not falling out whilst asleep. Though the second does not seem too much of a possibility we did worry a bit at first so if I can solve this one we would be happy. The other one has almost been sorted by trying steps and stools which seem to be pretty good . Other than that we have found this trailer succesful and hope to have many trips in the future.

Don't know what you would do for the bed, if it has a wooden base are you able to have a padded wooden panel along the sides of the bed which is slightly higher than the mattress, or perhaps a couple of pillows or something.confuse

(Dare I say it.......I saw somewhere somebody recommended Viagra to stop a male from rolling out of bed, can't vouch for that though) no

would imagine one would be more likely to fall out of a camper bed using your suggested substance

A lot of camper trailers have a zip up privacy screen (canvas) that separates the bed from the main tent area. This would solve your problem though I don't know how much it would cost to retro fit.

Cheers,

jack

OFD,

I was in the Red Cross shop at Belmont this morning, and the had a slide under the mattress bed rail which is in an L shape (imagine two L's about a metre apart with a rail over the top) all that is required is to slide it under your mattress.

It's main purpose is to help someone get up from a laying position, but is well suited for not rolling out of bed.

Because it had a very small scratch on the white paintwork they said they would sell it for $10.

It would store easily too as it is light and you could put it in motor vehicle with the L shape so that you could have the L up against the side or back of the vehicle inside leaving only the bottom of the L protruding into the floor space, or turned on it's side in a corner.

This is their address if interested,

Australian Red Cross, Mobility Equipment Hire and Sales,

17- 19 Belgravia Street, Belmont WA 6104

Freecall: 1800 251 463

Email: wamehs@redcross.org.au

Website www.redcross.org.au

PS:  The shop is closing down about the end of this month so contact them soon if interested.

many thanks to all the interested people who tried to answer my couple of little problems with the trailer bed - I would like you to know these have now been solved. After many painful hours scanning the net and looking at many products - some that might have done the job and hundreds that wouldnt I changed my tack and believe it or not my brain clicked into gear and looking in a new direction an idea came to me. The solution was an expandable pole from the camping shop fitted with nylon clips on each end. When in an upright position and secured to the edge of the bed base and to the tent pole directly above the bed it created a perfect handrail to give support when climbing into bed from the two step ladder we have, and once in it became obvious it would also create enough of a barrier to stop one falling out. With another of these poles horizontal from the upright pole at a level just higher than the matress and over to the pole at the end of the bed it is the perfect bedrail. I am so happy that is over, and this may not be the right place but I wonder if any of you nice people may be able to offer advice - places to stop or not stop - on the run up the west coast to Darwin where we hope to go in july. Once again thanks for the interest shown. Restores my faith in people.

SWMBO was over there today looking at something for her sister Dave and took the pics for me.  I'll pass on your thanks.

It is set up in the showroom, it's not part of the bed on show, they just put it there to show us how it worked.

I don't know how you would get on with the bars under the mattress though, seems they may be a bit uncomfortable.

Worth checking out though.  If you do decide to buy it, tell the girl you had someone checking it out for you and she told them it was only $10 because it had some scratches on it.

For $10 it may be worth buying anyway......

Many thanks again - space is crucial with a camper trailer and though this device would have done the job ,it doesnt fold flat so it would be awkward to pack into trailer.
