Probably a stupid question....

we hope to camp out at a friends place and wish to use the toilet in caravan...can we empty the cassette into a normal dunny?

and if so, what do we put in the cassette? Is the napisan ok? Figure it should be cos I recall soaking my kids nappies in a bucket of napisan and throwing it down the toilet!

If your friends system is connected to sewage it would be fine even with the standard toilet chemicals in you cassette.

But if they are on septic it would be advisable to find a dump point as any chemical deposited in the septic system will kill the bacteria and destroy the system resulting in a tank pump out.

Although other travellers advise that napisan products are safe to use in septic systems I would not have them deposited in to our septic system.

Napisan generic products are completely safe in Septic's, if they were not, septics all over the country would be failing where ever there was a baby in the house, napisan is an oxygen activator, not a disinfectant.

I am told by a CP owner that it is not so much the chemicals that cause problems but that the toilet pipes are not big enough to take all that waste and get blocked very easily. So - would suggest you empty it very slowly.

I would empty in a Dump Point, if for some reason your friends have a blockage in the next few weeks after you leave, say from tree roots, who will they sub conciously blame.

There are dump point locations on the Net, however I do not know the Web address as I use CMCA info on Dump points.

A lot of people make this statement that haven't got a septic or do not have to maintain one

The usual procedure was to empty the bulk and rinse/soak the nappies.

Having smelt the aftermath in caravan parks where people have emptied into the toilets... please dont do this if you wish to remain welcome at your friend's!

I empty into dump points when on the road. When I get home I empty into the house toilets (not septic) I don't see a problem. Its only some liquid, some toilet paper and a little napisan.

When in a CP at Coober Pedy last September they actually had a dedicated seperate toilet for waster dump. It was well set up actually with the toilet as usual, and then a seperate low set waste water trough with a hose to clean out the cassette, so I am guessing that it would not be a problem.
Never really thought about it before now, when using a dump point the waste must have to go into the sewarage or septic system that the area has anyways.
Interesting topic though.

I believe that in discussing dump points we should always differentiate between LARGE Motor home grey & black water holding tanks and SMALL porta pottie type cassette toilets.

I can see no issue in emptying cassettes into properly functioning sewer connected toilet pans. I do that at the end of every trip. Using them to empty a large holding tank is another matter.

I too would be very reluctant to empty either into a septic system irrespective of the chemicals being used.

Most caravan parks that are connected to sewers seem to me to have their dump points connected directly into the sewer lines. I assume that those with septic systems would utilise a holding tank, that require regular pumping out.

PS. When emptying my cassette there is very little solid material so I can't see blockages as an issue. But I would still empty a full cassette carefully and in stages.

Where I use a normal toilte suite to empty a cassette, I take a deodorisor spray with me & use it liberally before & after the operation.

When we got our new dunny installed, we christened our porta pottie. Once the toilet was in and working, I made the mistake of qaqttempting this. If you do do it, take my advice and do it very slowly, otherwise backsplash may occur as my case. Half an hour later and half a bottle of domestos, everything was clean, then it was back to wine. Oh, don't do it if you have one glass to many!

Thanks everyone...seems the answer is a yes!! Excellent!!! And yep...will make sure I do it slowly and havent hit the wine first...actually, the dunny emptying is his job...will make sure HE doesnt drink too much beer first!! :)

Most of our weekend getaways are only a short distance from home so more often than not I empty straight into our toilet.Just angle that spout to go as low into the bowl as possible and pour slowly. We use chemicals, no smell. Except the time the van was backed too close to the wall and we had to leave it. Not nice when it finally got emptied lol.

We lived in our van in our back yard for almost 6 months, using our "septic" system as our dump point, with no issues. As long as your chemicle reads as being septic friendly, it is OK to use. we use bioblue, but finding it increasingly hard to purchase as we travel west.

We use napiesan but make sure you use the one with at least 30% active we made a mistake and used 25% not good and we dump in our septic when we come home if need be and no probs

There are no stupid questions

There are two types of septic systems in a normal house toilet

Some houses have a septic tank, in their back yard
Nappy San is OK for this type of system, but some toilet chemicals are not

Some houses are on the town septic system, where the sewerage leaves the property, to be treated elsewhere
Some say that this system is OK to use toilet chemicals, and/or Nappy San

As a house toilet is usually an enclosed room, the smell will linger for a while

I would ask the owner if it was OK to use their toilet, to empty your cassette
I would also use plenty of toilet air freshener spray
If I had a fan, and the toilet was not in the centre of the house, I would attempt to blow some of the odour away

As others have said, make sure that the Nappy San has more than 30% of Sodium Percarbonate

The last place I empty my cassette, at the end of my road trips, is my own toilet at home

As a side note the dump point at the Discovery Caravan Park, in Darwin ($51 per night), is a normal toilet
There was a smell there, but obviously many people were using it, to empty their cassette

I had assumed that before you empty the cassette, you have swirled it around plenty of times, to ensure that the solid bits have broken up
