SWMBO and self had occasion to buy Fish and Chips in UK last year, in a town in the UK,which once had one of the largest trawler fleets in the country, and we were more than a little surprised to pay £28 00 for two modest pieces of Haddock and a serve of chips, with mushy peas, (love those mushy peas!!!) On the current rate of exchange that equals $41.9732 Aud. I have never paid $41 00 for fish and chips here. Only one instance I grant you, but not everything is cheaper in Pommieland.

I gather from reading the newspapers that since "super trawlers" have been operating in the UK and surrounding waters, fish are very scarce? Therefore the price is outrageous.
It looks like we are next on the super trawler menu.
I went to the UK in 1997 and a few weeks before I had bought a whole rump steak for $29 ,probably around 8 or 10 kilos all up.
Got to the Uk and decided a steak would be nice. One very thin,6 to 8mm thick piece about 150mm by 75 was 12 pounds sterling that was when two Aussie dollars bought a pound. That was in a mainstream chain similar to Coles or Woolies.
Looks like things haven't changed. Sounds like petrol is the same over three dollars a litre I'm told.
Yes, my rellies in England reckon Australia is now dearer than them - but depends what they are comparing for price. We still found it expensive to travel in UK in 2009. Paid 200GBP for a room one night - admittedly it was in a good location for getting to places but it wasn't soundproof and we couldn't even take our 'free' samples of shampoo and conditioner with us - they were attached to the wall! We made sure we had a very 'filling' breakfast in the morning!
From my experiences visiting the Uk is great as long as you have lots of friends and relatives to stay with and you don't get hungry.... if you happened to win tatts just before you go helps too. I've been a number of times and loved it, lived in Wales at one time and ran a B & B /pub. I think the very positive thing that has come out of my O S travel is my great appreciation for Australia and all it has to offer. sure we have our problems too and the cost of living is going up etc etc but we are a VERY lucky country. I'm now concentrating on seeing as much of Australia as I can while I can and loving it.
I agree Evie n Rhys. I lived there for 6.5 years and have been back 4 or 5 times. Am always glad to enjoy the place but also very glad to come home to Australia.
My feeling is that food and comodity prices are more competetive now than they have been in years, it's a shame we cant say the same about power water and fuel.
