too true you got it in one, England used to be much more expensive than here but friends who hav just come home after two years said prices especially grocery's fuel and alcohol are now far dearer hear than in England --- Go Coles and Woolworths.

In Cooktown last year LPG was $1.36 per litre at the Caltex which was the only one with LPG in town and at Lakeland it was .97 per litre guess who was gouging the public

Ya dead right biggles. I had not travelled overseas and had never wanted to.
In 1997 I was seconded to a AusAid Project to the Philippines for 11 months - loved the money I was paid, loved the people but SO glad I was not required to live there full time. At the time, I would say to Aussies back home that everyone in OZ should be made to live there for six months - they would never again criticise Australia.
I changed jobs and from 2003 I was required to travel to various areas of the USA and many European countries - for periods of two or three weeks at a time. I found the places interesting, in particular "old Rome". However, the best part of the trip was boarding the QANTAS plane in Hong Kong on the return journey. There is no way I would choose to live in any of the places I visited.
Despite what we often think about living here, Australia is the absolute best country to live in - despite the 'price' it may cost. We do need to understand that Australia rates in the top three countries when "standard of living" is valued.
However, this will continue to be eroded as we greedily continue to try to extract more and more in wages and conditions, and continue to turn this beautiful country into a vast quarry with the goods extracted being exported rather than retaining a higher percentage to be consumed domestically. We wonder why the vast majority of people buy "chinese" goods - coz they are ridiculously cheaper than anything we can make, build or develop here. We have priced ourselves out of competitive export trade.

Try renting or buying a flat/apartment the size of a shoebox in London or New York and see what it costs.
Fuel prices in Australia are low by first world standards. Yes I know in USA they are lower. If comparing remember a gallon in USA is approx 3.7 litres not 4.54 litres.
When comparing prices picking isolated examples is flawed, a whole package of prices need to be compared. The CIA compile lists to compare various countries and they use a factor called "Purchasing Power Parity" to convert currencies to US dollars. This gives a more realistic view than using tradeable exchange rates.
One should also take into account services that are provided free or heavily subsidised such health, education, etc, also taxes (all taxes) and the availability of and extent of welfare and pensions (known to the boffins as "taxes and transfers")
I think good'ol Aus comes up pretty well on these measures. If I may paraphrase Churchill, Australia is the WORST country in the world, with the exception of every other country.

My word in brackets. I've been saying this since my first trip O/S in the mid-60's John. This is still the best country in the world to live in, even if we are slowly adopting far too many American ideas. [In my opinion.]

While driving a taxi in the 80's, I picked up a lady who worked for an international travel booking agency. Her job was to personally evaluate new hotels around the world that wanted to join up.
She asked me if I had traveled overseas, and when I said no, her response was : Don't waste your time, you are in the best place already !!!
