Hand pump tap leaking

Hi, I have a recurring problem with the hand pump tap leaking. It happened once before and we thought we had it fixed, but it is leaking again.

The water is comming up the plastic tube, and leaking down from the top of the aluminium tube into the cupboard under the sink.

It is a normal caravan hand pump tap, freely available. This is the second we have had trouble with. We have done all the obvious things eg replaced seals, sealed between tap and sink, tightened hose clamp etc. We have run out of ideas.

Can anyone help?

Will be interested in any answers to this problem Havingfun.
The one in my van is very old and tends to leak too. May have to get it looked at but where?

I'm joining the leaky hand-pump club too! Luckily ours only leaks into the sink for a short time after being used, not into the cupbard.
Best wishes with it, if you can find a good one we will all be grateful!

Mine had a hairline crack down the shaft of it which I found after taking it out and testing it with a bucket of water. Fixed with sealant and duct tape for cents. So satisfying to find a cheap fix.

Thanks to everyone who responded, looks like it is a common problem. Lets keep the topic open and if anyone finds a solution we can let the others know!

In the past I had similar problems with those junk pumps, No More.

What type of pump do you have, Is it like the first pump in the picture ??

These seem to be the most common type I have seen, and usually cost around $25 to $30.

The other style of pump is a Fynspray.

At around $70, they are not cheap, but, I have never had a problem with these. I have used this type of pump in our past 2 camper trailers and now in the van.

This was one of the first things I changed in our van when we purchased it.

Anyone that may be looking at changing to this model, please note that the base is not round ( like the cheapie), it is more rectangle and may require a slight mod to the bench top for clearence against the sink.

When I replaced the one in our van, I mounted it sideways so the base would clear the sink, (so didnt have to modify)

Thanks for the pics D&S. Yes mine looks like the one on the left only the white bits are brown. When I pump, the 2nd white bit down moves up and down on the pipe. ( it shouldn't be doing that)
Thats where the water seems to leak out. At the bottom of that 2nd bit of white.

 Hi HW,

Those cheapies are a pain, The Fynspary is far superior, smoother operation and I think they draw more water as the plunger tube has a slightly larger diameter.

I buy the Fynspray from a marine supply company and you also buy repair kits for them (i have never had to buy one as yet) for around $15.00

I also use one of these non return valves, it retains the water in the hose, so you dont have to prime the pump all the time.

This is a one way valve, try and fit it as close as you can to the water tank. just make sure it is fitted the correct way.

Regards, (internet keeps dropping out on me)

I will look in to that D&S as soon as I have my power system sorted out.
I find I have to prime mine each time I want to use it. I keep a cup of water beside it just to prime.

When we had the Flamingo we had 4 hand pumps in 3 months (all under warranty), when the warranty expired we gave up trying & replaced it with an electric one. No further trouble after that.

Thanks !. I often use marine bit and pieces for jobs and mods. Costs are sometimes more, but worth the extra.
I have found the marine gear often lasts longer and more reliable. I have use switches, pumps, stainless gear, etc.
Those cheaper pumps usually separate from the plastic section where it goes through the bench. I think this is where Happywanderer one is leaking.

Daryl

Also think a lot of the plastic crap ones will not hold up to some of the water  we some times have to use .

Thanks DandS, we have fitted the marine tap and so far no problems. After all the frustration with the cheap taps would have been better to buy this tap in the first place!
