Great Place well worth a few days, but with a van I would go in from Oakey and take your time.

Back in 2000 we were on a 4WD Club trip with 4 others with one other towing a small van and we were in our Frontera towing a Goldstream Link. We went to the Bunya Mountain NP from Kumbia and we were Tailend Charlie . At the time I wrote

It was then on to Kumbia where a couple of kilometres down the highway we turned on to the road leading to the Bunya Mountains National Park.

The first thing that greets you on this road is this sign "UNSUITABLE FOR BUSES, TRUCKS, CARAVANS AND TRAILERS". Further along you come across another sign that says, "Trucks use low gear"??  The others said  no worries Ron we will protect you.

The road is relatively flat for a while then it begins to rise. Then it begins to climb. It just keeps climbing and climbing and climbing. In parts it is quite narrow which causes some difficulty when a bus comes the other way.

We all found that we were using very low gears to get up the hill. I was using first gear (2WD) for a good portion of the climb and after a near encounter with a bus, which caused me to stop, I had to use 4WD low first to get mobile again.

The scenery on the drive is fantastic, and on the steeper parts of the road the bush forms this magnificent canopy over the road. On hot days this would no doubt help cool the engine

 After a couple of days at the Dandabah Campgrounds, where there were a number of large vans, it was time to move on down the mountain. We continued down the road towards Oakey. The views from the hills are fantastic and with the exception of one steep section of the wide highway like road, in comparison to the kingaroy side, it was uneventual trip down and on to Toowoomba."

Is there anyone on the forum taken their caravan to the the Bunya Mountains in Queensland , If so were did they stay on or off the Mountian

There is a sign at the bottom of the road on the Bunya Highway that says not suitable for caravans. Steep and windng road.
I saw it only a few days ago.
I do know a lot leave their caravan at the Apex Park in Kumbia, have seen it every time I have stayed there. Lock it all up and it will be safe. Hope that helps.

Marj the reason I ask was on the park website they say winded road be carefull then they have a camping grounds suitable for caravans and large motor homes , When I go I think I will stay at Kumbia and drive in to the mountian if it is ok will know for next time . I did notice Kumbia has power and shower is that right

Yes, thats right. Power is a donation. I always give 5.00 a night. Showers are 2.00 in the slot for 3 minutes. It does say max 2 nights but I have stayed longer as have others. A great facility provided by a very small town, donate well. Some don't.

We were there in October and there were caravans there. My husband even found out how much it cost to stay. BUT it all depends on which direction you come into the park. The way we went (from Toowoomba) did have a sign saying it was too steep for caravans (although there was one ahead of us!) - if you come in from the north I think it is better. Google it again and see where the roads come in. I can't remember the name sorry.

Just south of Kumbia is the road up to the Bunya Mountain. Thats where I saw the sign.
never been up there so can't give an on the road account of conditions.

 We stayed at the Apex park also. After traveling up I would still be in 2 minds about taking the van up and we only have a 17 footer.

The camping area up top was on a beautiful lawn and the walks in the area were some of the best we have been on around australia. The place was a meeting place for aboriginals and we found the whole place had a very serene feel about it.

From the National Parks site today:



Dandabah Campground is currently closed at the Bunya Mts. National Park, due to flood damage.

This alert applies to the following parks:
Bunya Mountains National Park

Dandabah Campground is closed due to flood damage. Burton's Well and Westcott Campgrounds are open, but do note that these areas are for tent sites only. It is expected that the Dandabah Campground will open by early March. All walking tracks are now open, with care. Substanial flood repair works have been carried out recently, but further attention may be required. Some surfaces may be uneven, muddy, slippery or partially washed out.

The direction that seemed best for caravans was from the Kingaroy road through Alice Creek. Why not ring the National Parks in Queensland?

I think Kumbia will be the go then check Dandabah Camp grounds from Kumbia better to be safe than sorry

Thanks for all the help looks like there is lots to explore , Lots of roads in and out I see when you can get into Dandabah camp ground you must prebook so I think when you book they would be able to give advice on the best way in
