Sorry Popeye, but you are already 2 updates behind, Java is already up to update 13, I wont be reinstalling until I hear that all is now fixed, ever since this security problem came to light, the updates have been coming thru thick and fast and with each update the problems still seem to be there. Cheers David

ditto, if I had 7.11 I would delete it and wait for clearance from the tech guys, by that I mean I will not trust Java to tell me I'll go to at least 4 tech sites and get their opinions first.

I see no reason to reinstall it, perhaps I'm missing something.
So do all the Java programs need to be deleted? And how do I find out what it was used for on my PC? I supect it may have been for www.lexulous.com which I play with a friend through the email version. This site regularly has problems so I wonder if it does use Java, if that is the cause of them.
I used the W7 uninstall function to remove J V6 update 33, J V7 update 5 & J V7 64bit. All seemed to uninstall OK.
Did a full scan with Kaspersky Pure V2. Nothing found, but my Email scan was reported to be turned off (one report says off & another said it was on!) Now both say ON after I turned it on.
Not sure which of my programs require Java. I suppose that I will find out over time. I'll wait for a few weeks & check if the Java issue is fixed then reinstall the latest version.

Hi Beth, I would be inclined to uninstall all Java stuff for now.
The only way you can find out is by playing that game lexulous and see if it works, if yes then it does not use Jave if no then it does and you will have to tell your friend that you will play again as soon as Java is fixed.
Most of those online game sites have problems because of the amount of people playing them and at weekends and after school hours it gets buiser.

Hi Cupie, the only way your email is turned on or off is through your email program, should have nothing to do with Java.
Good to see you did a full scan after removing Java, I'll come back here as soon as I find that Java is all OK, and its problems holes have been plugged.

later down the track you may find some of your programs do not work without Java so you may need to reinstall or go without that program, at sometime along the track you will be asked to accept Java in a program you want to download.
Firstly even after i uninstalled all of the Java programmes and ran i full McAfee scan and the virus was removed i noticed a very odd behavior with my security. While everything was showing green and fixed with no problems at all with McAfee i discovered my fire wall was actually off but reporting is was on. In other words the virus had entered my McAfee security and was twiddling with the programme.
I reported this to them. I uninstalled and then reinstalled up to date McAfee, ran a full scan again and it picked up the virus yet again, once more the virus tinkered with my security and it was showing false condition. Please note java was again showing up in my programmes.
I next did a restore to a date a year ago and in safe mode deleted java, McAfee and every other unnecessary programme i could think of. Ran CC cleaner to make sure ever little bit of deleted information was totally wiped clean from my puter. Reinstalled up to date security and ran a total scan. I can now report all is OK. Passwords all changed. Security set to stealth and nothing is entering or leaving my puter without explicit permission. All programms left have been updated also In all it hours of work to fix.
No damage was done and no information as far as i can tell has been taken. I was lucky i acted so quickly.

Great post wombat, thank you again
I feel for you, it's a time consuming and frustrating process, often without a positive outcome, pleased to hear it worked out well for you.
The advice on many of the Tech sites is to leave your registry alone as it doesn't need cleaning, though these cleaning programs are promoted by the vendors of these programs as a, must have.
I am of the opinion if it's not broke don't fix it, as i often cause myself agro by playing around with programs, but if I do stuff things up I can usually sort it out myself.
I would recommend using Ccleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner but untick cookies, untick passwords and just use the cleaner not the registry cleaner
Ccleaner and Malwarebytes both have free versions and MS essentials is free.
There are many other programs that will be recommended by others and may be just as good, but I have found the above to be trouble free over along period of time
well that is strange, click reply and up comes my last post in this topic so that I can add to it so I clicked submit then reply and I get this blank reply that I should have got in the first place, is it more gremlins?
I only wanted to say to Beth that I have not tried Tweak Now Reg Cleaner so cannot say if its better or worse, if it does the job then use it is my motto.
I do clean the registery but I do it manually every time I delete a program I go into the registery and delete any mention of the program I have just deleted.
My antivirus etc, Kaspersky, popped up on both computers within three hours of each other and indicated there were certain files that needed cleaning of the virus/malware. Software nipped the infection in the bud and went through the full scan on both computers and declared the systems both clear. Mind you, both computers had updates to the virus thingos when I switched them on, so Kaspersky could be on top of it.

Sorry, didn't explain myself clearly.....
It was the 'Mail Ani-Virus' protection component in Kaspersky that was shown as 'off' in one of the Kaspersky reports. Another report said that it was 'on'. So I turned it 'on' in the report that said it was 'off'. (if that makes sense)
Checked it after I did the scan & it was reported as 'on'.

Thanks for that RD. I only have MSE and TweakNow, as set up by my PC geek friend. I've never had a virus or even a hint of one, so either I'm doing the right thing, or I've just been lucky. I'll think about downloading those two.
Wombat, re your first sentence, that's been happening to me for awhile now.
