BEWARE! IF you are on disability pension

A sister was about to book a 15 week overseas cruise when she was made aware of new rules that were introduced on 01-01-2013 about maximum time you can be out of Australia if in receipt of disability pension , the maximum is 6 weeks if you exceed this time frame your pension automatically be cancelled and you would have to reapply for the disability pension . She was informed that guide line are much harder and there is no guarantee you would get it back . This advice was given by a very helpful Centrelink FIO person . So if any member of the forum on a Pension are thinking of leaving Australia for more than 6 weeks should check with someone Centrelink before making any bookings

Sounds fair to me , If your on a Disability pension, you could not afford to go for 6 weeks anyway and Welfare ?? is supposed to be just That Welfare.

And if your family treats you to a trip to visit them? is that still fair?

It's not always just black & white.

That also applies to the aged pension.

 Gday...

Understand why you say that - and generally you may be correct. However, just like aged pensioners, those with a disability are able to have accrued assets during their lifetime that would allow them to afford a trip/holiday - even if it were only once in their lifetime. Perhaps the Disability Pensioner had an accident in their 40s (for example) and had been fully employed and a thrifty saver up until that time.

Cheers - John

It doesn't read that way to me Tiger5....quoting from Centrelink website

Age Pension and Pension Supplement

You can get Age Pension for the whole time youre overseas, regardless of whether you leave Australia temporarily or permanently. The rate of Pension Supplement you receive will reduce on departure if you leave Australia permanently, or after six weeks if you leave Australia temporarily.

The amount you receive may change again if you remain outside Australia for more than 26 weeks

Theres quite a few people who live here and receive their English or European pensions.

I'm SO grateful to live in our wonderful country that looks after its citizens, theres plenty of countries in this world that dont give any help to their disabled or sick or elderly citizens.

Dazren '' explains '' ??

I agree that the ''situation;; is not the same for ''everyone'' However I personally know of 2 families of 2 different ethnic backgrounds that spent 6-8 months a year back in their HOME countries.

All financed by the Australian taxpayer,One family has 3 Members all on a dis/pension, been in this country for 30 years, and only worked for the first 6-7, And both the Husband and Son are a lot Younger, fitter, and Healthier, Than me,  they know how to bleed the system, and they do it well, The other family are not as bad, as they do have a family business, But 2 of them are on Dis/Pension, spend many months a year O'seas, then come back and work in family business. [ cash-in-hand ]

these are just two of the many, many, thousands that Ripp-off our country, As I said?  I don't tar everyone with the same brush, But do situations like this P--S Me off ?? Bloody oath they do ??

I 100 percent totally agree Dazren.  I am on a disability pension I can't even afford to go to Sydney let alone overseas for a 6 week or a 15 week holiday.  How anyone can possibly afford that kind of holiday while on a disability pension makes me wonder if they are getting funds from an under the table type of job or similar.

I've worked dam hard over many years and would say that we are comfortable off.

Recently went onto a disablity pension for injuries incurred in the Navy THIRTY years ago that have just become severe enough for me to take notice.  So now I have people on this forum saying I (and others like me) should not be so well off, shouldn't be able to take overseas holidays, probably should not be able to afford a yacht or any other luxury items?

Well maybe the "harder I worked, the luckier (richer I got.  Try it yourselves sometimes.

I agree with you Dazren, I couldn't even get a carer's allowance for looking after dad...
yet there are people who can ripp off our great nation..

I too like you Michelle can travel little on my dsp,
I have been luck enough to do some traveling with dads help etc

when I went os I had to go see center link and let them know i was going away for a month
but never lost any payments, so may have changed since then.. that was 4 years ago..

I am not so inclined but I could go outside australia for a holiday on my disability.

At present I am saving for an upgrade on my camper.

Since the start of this year once you are away over 6 weeks you start losing part of your pension supplement but not your pension

 The above is correct.

When I made inquiries I was told that the Pension supplement is to assist those in Aus to pay for utilities etc, so when overseas these amounts are not paid.

That is true - re the Age Pension - only the supplement is affected as Onedodger says, as presumably you would not be using the utilities whilst overseas.

I am with you Ken most people like you would rather not finish up on disablity pension after given 30 years in the Navy , would much richer if you could have kept working , After all your hard work I do hope you have the life you work for .

People shouldn't make assumptions about people's reasons for being on the DSP or 'welfare', which I find a very distasteful word.

I'm sure the one's who are rorting the system are in the minority. Most of us don't choose to live our lives in pain or discomfort. And some of us just haven't had a chance, for various reasons, to make a nestegg before we go down this path.

And in Landfall's case..why should he have to live off his hard earned savings when his ailment was from something that happened while he was serving in the Navy. I'm sure he'd rather have his good health back and NOT be on the DSP. I certainly would!

Milo, I think you'll find the reason you couldn't get a carers pension was because you are on the DSP. You can't care for someone else if you're unwell yourself.

Thanks for the support B & B.

Just before Christmas we went on a thirteen day cruise from Sydney to NZ and return. When we got into Wellington, I went ashore with Lyn and we walked the length of the wharf and one block into the city, caught a taxi down to the yacht marina, walked again for about 10 minutes, back to the city in the taxi. I struggled to get back to the ship. Had six days of intensive treatment on my back, could hardly walk the length of the ship without a rest.

Since returning home I have been having treatment and more specialist appointments next week.

24/7 pain, now trying desperately to wean myself off addictive narcotic pain killers which I started to take after NZ.

Can no longer participate in my business which I absolutely love.

For those of you who want to criticize people like me, how much do you want for your good back bones? I'll pay, no problems.

A day without pain for me is heaven.

Will I give in, not without one hell of a fight, love my yachting, caravaning and travelling too much Just wish I could sit in a plane long enough to get to USA or Europe.

Cheers to everyone, I have ranted enough.

Ken.
