Magnetic Door Flyscreens

Doug, on my Avan Aliner, I had the Bunnings type of hanging door fly screen which had several narrow panels of fly screen, each with lead weights in the bottom.  They fit into a plastic runner/holder at the top of the screen.

I moved the narrow hanging panels to overlap each other a bit more in the top runner holder to fit the width of the Avan doorway, and added some glue to keep them there (in the runner) you can cut the top of them to a shorter length beforehand if you wish before you set them in the runner.

Then I applied a velcro strip to the back of the runner, and also stuck on the matching stick on strip to just above the curved doorway in a horizontal line.

I left the length of the fly screen so that the lead bottoms hung just outside and below the door entry (so they didn't blow inwards from the breeze).   The strips are easily pulled back into the doorway entry if you decide to close the door.

When travelling the screen can be pulled apart off the opposing velcro strips for storage.

I also bought a postal tube the right length and width for the screen when it was removed and rolled up which kept it secure and protected for storage.

It worked well for me in the 7 years I had it on the van.

I was trying to find a link to the one I have mentioned but couldn't find one, but in the process came across this one for vehicle sliding type windows that don't have flyscreens, also good for wind down door windows, see;

These sound like a good bargain, someone I know has one on their house and is very happy with it.

I imagine they could be altered to suit RV door openings if needed...

Had them on the front and back doors at my house - worked very well - seen a few caravans on, especially ones with children - parents not at them all time to shut the door.

You can get them at Big W as well, I believe.

Been thinking of doing that myself Vic., but wasn't sure how it would stick.  [For the side door.]  Might even try it for the back.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Wouldn't the magnetic ones work better for you on the metal inside or outside the doorways, or is it all covered with lining etc?

Wer'e on our 3rd on the back door of our house in a bit over a year. They can get dirty, they may tear at the top centre from use, also tear where held at sides (a 23yo boy barging through doesn't help). They look good, are great for pets and very convenient.

We found full length magnets work best as the ones with half a dozen individual magnets get blown open and are more stubborn closing in a wind  (the ones we have now have full length magnets plus individual ones so it closes great).

We found white gets dirty too easy from hands, cat pushing his way through and general dust etc. Not too easy to clean the stuff. We found black is the best and least noticable.

Cheers

Jon

BTW: These were the cheapie ebay types.

No worries, the velcro might be worth a try!

I did mine the same as way your Avan Vic but the velcro keeps coming of the Avan aluminium on the inside. I am now thinking of putting 2 removable bolts with wing nuts on the inside and rubber washers on the outside that way it won't come down and I can remove easily when need too. That side panel is under cover when folded down so no problem there. With the cost of these Avans it would be good for the manufacturers to come up with something.

My van side Velcro ran across on the white panel Doug not the aluminium door surround but above it.  I think I also had it tucked under the roof handle too on one side, I can't remember now.   Good luck with yours, hope the bolts work ok!

Doug we saw a homemade fly screen on a van in Townsville so went straight next door to S----light and bought the makings. We bought a plastic covered metal curtain rod as long as the door was wide and stuck then screwed two of those slip in curtain rod holders (they come in packs of 2 and you have to push the rod into them from one side) Then I handstitched a rod pocket at top and stitched some fishing leadweights into the bottom of a piece of mossie netting (black so it doesn't show the dirt). We've used it for years. When we don't need it it is just rolled up and stored in a cupboard, when the flies or mossies get too much it comes out and is popped into the rod holders. Only problem we have had with it was when we were also burning a mossie stick and the wind blew the curtain on the flame - now has a small hole in it. I'm sure your sewing skills would be up to it and since the rod doesn't have to stay there, all your AVan bits could still fold up couldn't they?

Thats seems like the easiest way of doing it. Have been thinking of all sorts of solutions but none really satisified. Thank You. Could not justify the comercially fitted ones at $450.00 each.

We bought some from Cheep As Ch... in SA last March for less than $10, and have used them ever since.  Have had no problems with magnets or velcro.  Now, would not be with out them.  Have even bought another set, "just in case" the ones we have perish.

Ebay has many for sale. Just do an eBay search for 'magnetic insect screens'. Or try a place like this: http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/instant-mesh-mosquito-fly-guard-2/

Does price mean quality? who knows. confused.gif

Cheers

We had them on our vans. Found the best way for us was to sew a pocket across the top. 2small screws hold a white wire curtain wire. Pins supplied down the sides. We did the wire so they can be pushed out of the way when loading the van etc. Definitely get black. Great for the dog to let himself in and out.. Need to get some for the new van
