Warranty - "Millions wasted"

Yes your warranty does extend past the period specified by the manufacturer but in most cases you are in for a long battle to get most manufacturers to agree to fix anything outside their stipulated warranty period and statements made by Consumer Affairs just goes to prove they don't live in the real world, many times it is easier to fix whatever is wrong and get on with your life, rather than stress yourself chasing a warranty claim outside of a warranty period.
Cheers

"SHOPPERS are wasting tens of millions of dollars buying extended warranties for goods that are already covered for free under little-known federal consumer laws.

South Australian Consumer Affairs Commissioner Paul White said in many cases it was pointless to pay for extended warranties on items such as whitegoods and electronic equipment."

Does this mean too that (say) a caravan manufacturer's warranty is not limited to its specified time where a serious defect evidences?  A caravan is expersive and the purchaser is withing his/her rights to expect durability beyond the expressed year or few of stated warranty.

Your right there, they'll find any reason not to live up to their warranty. Like Roving-Dutchy said it's easy to just fix it and move on, but make sure you post it here so we can all spread the word on what not to buy again. I did hear a case of where a car insurance mob refused a claim because the car had been fitted with a different brand of tyre than what it had left the showroom with. They had stopped production of that brand, but it was in the small print, how low can you go.

Cheers

I recently bought a GPS at Dick Smith, they tried to sell me an extended warranty and said if I didn't have one and something went wrong with the gps it could not be replaced.   I reminded the sales person that by law, if a product is faulty, they have no option under consumer law.  I also recently bought a camera from somewhere else and they tried to sell me the extended warrant there too, but I refused.

Yesterday purchased a 22" Teac Combo TV
( but think its closer to 21 and 1/2 inches)

Full HD ( not just HD according to the sign in the store) has DVD and USB Recording and playback, viewing angle no probs, LED/LCD unit, headphone jack and PC input to use as a monitor and also runs on 12v, and the price $237 from Hardly Normal. Supposedly at 1/2 price. At the same time I purchased 3 year replacement cover.

Prior to the purchase read in yesterdays Adelaide newspaper that claimed customers are ripped off with extended warranties, regardless in a caravan, 1000Km away from home any problems, I can with a 3 year replacement cover, go in and change the TV over, not waite weeks to get it fixed up under a Fed/State law covering fit for use. Also got the Replacement cover at a very good price. A friend had problems with his TV while away from home and it was under warranty ( not replacement) and he ended up buying another TV

In the Van, we carry the TV near vertical on our bed, have been told that laying it down horizontal can impact the screen resolution or such, just another reason for the replacement cover. Another reason for the cover is that travelling over some of the dirt road/tracks with vibration that can cause parts to become loose.

Would not have purchased the replacement cover it was a home TV.

I wonder if your friend was "conned" by the retailer he saw about his TV warranty?

Even though he bought another, he should still be able to get his money back on the old one.  John's link in the first post says;

RESPONSIBILITY for refunding, replacing or repairing a faulty product under warranty rests with the retailer.

GOODS outside of a manufacturer's warranty period that are faulty within a reasonable time are also the responsibility of the retailer to remedy.

RETAILERS who falsely claim an extended warranty gives greater protection than that provided under consumer law face fines of more than $1 million.

No worries Peter, as long as it meets your needs and you are happy with it..  smile

As a aside, about 6 months ago I bought a Samsung 40" TV for home from Good Guys.  A few weeks later a line developed across the screen, so I contacted Good Guys and they got a Samsung service bloke to ring me.  He made an appointment to come out the following day and he replaced the whole TV with a new one in my home at no cost to me.  Apparently they had a factory fault with this particular model.  All this was done under the manufacturers normal warranty.  The new one has worked perfectly even since so one happy Samsung customer.

Duh,
From memory, friend got his TV fixed up when back in Adelaide under warranty. cannot recall how long it took, his viewpoint at the time was he did not want to be without a TV while it was being fixed up, away from home on a long trip. leave the TV in town A, not knowing how long it will take to fix and being in Town D, x weeks later, not wanting to go back to town A to pick it up.

Regardless,
I would still purchase a replacement cover for a Caravan TV Combo again.

At no stage was Extended warranty mentioned by HN SA, it was Replacement.

Our experience is that a previous Combo TV in our caravan with a 4 year Extended Warranty cover had problems with the DVD player and HN replaced it with a 19 TV Combo around 3 or 4 years ago that had a List price of $625. How the price of these items has changed.
