If you mean engaging low range and not the front hubs, I do it often to get more tow power pulling my 7m boat up the local ramp. Doesn,t seem to hurt the gearbox or tranfer case.It isn,t good to engage the front hubs on hard sealed surfaces as there is no slip. and you could damage something.Bill

No problem to do it if you have manual selection free wheeling hubs. If electronic selection on the hubs once low range chosen, then you'd need to fit a switch to isolate the hubs. Generally however, short term use in low gears either with front hubs selected or otherwise is not a problem. Better to go that way than burn a clutch out.

Just be aware that you are doubling the possible torque that can be transmitted through the rear axles and diff. They are not designed to for that, so treat the throttle "like eggs" otherwise it is possible to break things.

I used low range without 4wd in my 4Runner for rounding up cattle and emus, and for teaching kids to drive (they can't go too fast and they can't stall while learning clutch control) for 20 years without any problems David
