Experimental LED

Followng a discussion at Greens Lake a few weeks ago, I have been ivestigating different types of LED lights.

I have just received a 5W Rectangular LED, it is a really good source of light, and power consumption is low.

Dimensions:  100mm * 9.5mm * about 2mm high. The LED material is about 2mm shorter and narrower that the aluminium carrier.

It generate a clean bright light, slightly softer than the stark white LEDs that are common.

I used a battery at 12.2v and it consumed 2A, resullting in a 2.4w of power consumption. It also generates a small amount of heat.

I sourced this example from DX.com (cheap but slow online source, with lots of toys).

John, you are absolutely correct, when I went back and re measured it it was 0.2A, so cunsumption is really 2.4W at 12V.

Yes it is bright, I tested it in a room about 2m by 3m, with a white ceiling, I used it as an up light from the top of a bookcase, and the reflected light off the ceiling was enough to read comfortable across the room.

I would say you could light the living and sleeping space in a 20ft van with 2 or 3 units used in a similar manner (pointing up), thus a total power drain of about 0.6A.

I realise that it is advertised as 5W, and draws 2.4W, but its light output is about equivalent to a 65W globe in the old incandescent style.

Deals Extreme are great for gadgets - recently purchased three 12v chargers for our computers - only needed two, but got a discount for buying three, with free postage - arrived in about two weeks - work a treat - the three were $35. One thing though, the supplied connection to the computer socket didn't fit my HP, but I swapped mine with Yeoelven, and that works well.
