Preparing to "hit the road"

Hi to all happy campers out there

We are also in the very early stages of planning a 3 month trek to Cape York and beyond, although this might change as we approach the time of departure. We are both still working so time is limited. If we have our vehicle ready for the Cape then we will know it can go anywhere. The thoughts have been with us for a long, long time. Will we do it, can we do it (of course we can), all of the "what ifs" continually come and go, but the decision has been made to stop thinking about it and start planning.

We purchased a camper trailer without all the mod cons.  We have all the cons from previous camping trips, they may not be mod but are still good to go. Setting it all up and putting it together is the next task, so when we pull into to camp somewhere for a night or a few days/weeks everything will be at our finger tips so to speak.

Today Steve fixed a 70 litre water tank with a stainless steel protection cover under the trailer, we already have a number of water containers attached to our Rodeo, but extra is essential.

And already our travelling route has changed and we will head west, through the Isa, visit Lawn Hill and on into the Northern Territory.  Hopefully catch up with people in Alice springs.

There is so much information on the Internet regarding camping, cooking, packing, best places to set up etc and we are reading and devouring everything we can.  Everyone has their own ideas of what's best and it is fabulous to be able to share with the newbies like us.  We have camped before but not for any length of time, so this will be a whole new and exciting experience and we can hardly wait.

Suzette & Steve

Welcome from us. Hope you enjoy this forum. Probably one of the best guides is the Grey Nomads Guide book as written by this website's owners. Featured on the Home page. Have fun planning then going.

Welcome from me too Suzette and Steve, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I agree with neilnruth about the book and also have a good look through this forum at all sections, there is so much good information and advice here.

Welcome Suzette and Steve from us as well. You will have a wonderful time, don't worry too much, just get out there and do it. But I must admit the planning is very exciting as well. Lawn Hill is magical. If you go into Lawn Hill via Gregory Downs plan some time free camping on the Gregory River, a beautiful spot with lots of birdlife. Turn left at the hotel, over the bridge and great camping down to the right. Welcome again and enjoy Glenda and Gary

This [don't know why it's Green.] is the site to go to for Info. when going up the Cape.   You'll have help [if you have any queiries,] from frequent visitors to the area, and Locals.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Thanks everyone. We haven't even put the tent up yet, but will be going to Bramston Beach next week for 3 nights to try it all out.  Will take some photos of our rig and post.  The guy we purchased from had it specially made but didn't use because in the mean time he and his wife grew their family by one and decided to upgrade to a caravan instead as they didn't want to take baby in a camper trailer!!  Camper is made from heavy grade rip stop, I think that is what it is called.  I guess we need to waterproof it???

Thanks Sheba for the Cape York info. It looks like another great site with great ideas. I am also looking for a couple of recipes I saw on this forum, one was kola chicken and the other was for a hotpot. They are not in the recipe section and I can't remember who posted them. Bit like looking for a needle in a haystack :))
