Information received today in writing from Neil Manning, Director of Council Services, Ararat Rural City Council about the status of free camping at Greenhill Lake Ararat:
"Green Hill Lake is a simple camping ground with limited facilities. Council publicises quite widely, including through its Visitor Information Centre, that there are no fees applied for camping at Green Hill Lake. Council undertakes the major maintenance operations at Green Hill Lake Reserve including, road maintenance, building repair and public toilet facilities and the associated operating costs.
The Green Hill Lake Development Board is an incorporated body friends of group that undertake a number of smaller maintenance functions at Green Hill Lake. These include mowing and other low impact activities such as cleaning and upkeep of BBQ facilities. The Green Hill Lake Development Board accepts donations to help offset its costs in operating mowers and clean-up activities. Donations are not compulsory, and if donations are being solicited then Council does not condone such actions."

Although the sign does say it is free, it also says that you can donate if you wish to do so, or words to that effect
The consensus is that $2.50 (two dollars fifty cents), per person per night is the correct thing to do When the ranger gives a receipt, he writes your rego number on it
Not to be confused with Greens Lake at the other end of Victoria, near (Rochester being the nearest larger town)
This Green Hill Lake also has a boat ramp, trees for shade, and toilet The difference is that Green Hill Lake also has free warm showers, a 240 volt socket in the toilets, and potable drinking water The shower only has one tap, so it is a pre-set temperature There are fire type BBQ pits, and seats with tables
The dump point is in the town about 5 kilometres away
As it was very hot, we stayed for about six nights, as I had managed to get near the waters edge, under some shade
We thought that $5 per night was very good value for money
There was not much rubbish, but I picked it up every second day
