Selling On Consignment

Thanks FF, just sent you a pm!

Just to give you an idea, read the tabs (two different types on same subject, one works, one don't) on selling by consignment, although they say they also buy outright, they told me that they get that many on consignment they don't have too (costs them nothing for stock, so don't blame them).   See;

We are looking at selling our caravan on consignment and were wondering if any here have done the same?

What does it involve and how do they calculate their fees?

At this stage we have not approached a company but perhaps in the New Year.

Google selling on consignment, in particular read the forum shown on the google search.

This is one shown by RAC WA, also check with your local RAC/NRMA for info;

 Is "doh" the female equalivent to the male "duh" wink biggrin

I did reply to this three times (in detail) but for some reason it kept not posting and erasing the post, not sure what was wrong, so glad you got this one.

I would check with your consumer affairs dept in you state (which is?) and ask their opinion and see what they say.

I am using a reputable dealer for consignment (as far as I am aware) in WA, they sold a camper trailer for me at an agreed price and are doing the same for me with my campervan at the moment, I have an interested party at the moment they are negotiating with (their mark up, not my contracted price which they are obliged to pay unless I drop it which I won't).  I have full confidence in them, so see what happens...I just had to put another 6 months rego on it though as it had nearly expired (no choice unless I wanted it to run out before it is sold).

PM me if you want more details etc,

Vic

NSW mate, Hunter Valley. wink

I hope you do well with yours Vic.

We have ours in the driveway, not under cover and we don't want to do that for too long in the heat.

Hi Vic and FF ..

For your info, I've found over recent years that there area lot of "un-monitored" ads floating about on the net .. even from major well-known businesses.

I've found it beneficial to often place a phonecall if you're able to find one, and speak personally to someone there asking for them to email out the details you are seeking ..

I would say I've had better than a 50% success rate which I find suitable ..

Well good news (and sad in some ways) my consignment agent just sold my Hi Ace Campervan for me at our agreed net contract price today (for me) and I can expect a cheque in the mail next week.   One good thing they do is to make sure any payment cheques for the vehicle etc are all cleared before they release the vehicle, so I am happy with that.aww

May I say that my experience with them to date has been excellent including the previous sale of a camper trailer for me, and in this depressed market at the moment I am very happy! biggrin

So now left with my Outlander and rear end tent for any future excursions unless things change! hmm

(See "Show Us Your Rig" section for Outlander/Tent).

I have a Motorhome for sale at present in Tasmania. The Dealer wants $5,000.00 off the sale price. I've only done this because I'm overseas. When I return I'll try sellit myself for a fair price. I tried a few Dealers in Victoria but they all told me it's against the law in that State to sell on consignment. I also called RV Centre in Sydney. they would take it but wanted $15,000.00... Advertising on Trading Post and Gumtree attracts a lot of Scammers...

Thanks John & BG,

I sold a campervan with the company in WA and found them ok.

They tell you what the van is worth to them (I checked with a couple of others about consignment and they were one of the two better ones).   That is your net price is the item is sold during a three month contract signed by both of you (legal motor trade contract).  They can add whatever they like on the net contract price for themselves, which covers advertising, cleaning the vehicle while it is in the yard, storage and security paying their staff (sales, office, cleaning etc).

After the three months if it hasn't sold, you can either take the vehicle back or re-negotiate another term if you are both happy with that.

It is all above board and another selling option to explore if other means have not been productive, saves tyre kickers and time wasters coming to your home and you also have the advantage of the yard traffic (prospective purchasers) they have.  It does also mean though that your item is competing with anything in the yard, so you need to be realistic.

Thanks FF,

Tell them to make sure they get the right size for their particular type of vehicle, see this size guide (US models, but the dimensions and other info help decide).

http://lakelandgear.com/truck-tent-guides/dac-truck-cap-tent-sizing-guide.html

Sheba can give you some guidance too, she is getting one larger than mine, a pm to her would probably be best....smile

Regards consignment, here is one at Lismore, doesn't say it has to be a coromal for used;

http://www.coromalcaravanslismore.com.au/sell-your-caravan-with-us

Here is a large one too that sells on consignment, Penrith and Narambeen;

http://www.sydneyrvgroup.com.au/sell-or-consign-your-rv?gclid=CJjkitu33rMCFUdfpQodK3MAYg

PS:  I notice a complaint on a website about someone in NSW having a Trail Mate stolen from their van while in a yard at Penrith on consignment, when they complained to the dealer they said it was the owners responsibility, not theirs.

Someone suggested taking photo's of your van and anything in it when you put it in the yard and also have a list of things with it in the yard written into the contract......

I notice that Hodgson's Caravans at Redhead (outer suburb of Newcastle) have vans for sale on consignment. Their business is caravan storage and repairs, not caravan dealers per se.

I'm not in a position to imply a recommendation (or otherwise) for them.

Oh Vic, I am happy for you sorta. It must be hard parting with it mate but at least you got a good dollar for it. wink

A friend of mine just bought a VW Transporter and was after an add on. I showed him your rear end tent and he is looking into one for his vehicle.

Thanks for that Jim. They are a bit closer, I might go see them or at least phone up. smile

Will let you all know the outcome.
