I've been to the Prom.

Wilsons Promontory that is!

We are camped at Shallow Inlet Campground, CAW 6 #93. Excellent place. Particularly after the hussle and bustle of Melbourne. It was so quiet and dark last night..very peaceful.

There's a CP just before you enter this Reserve if you want to have power etc.

The reserve costs $12 per night, with CLEAN pit toilets, and rainwater taps. The camp spots are well spread out nestled in amongst the trees. And it's a short walk to the beach.

Today we drove out to the Prom which was just amazing! They had some really bad floods through in March 2011, and they're still doing repairs.

Tidal River CAW 6 #94,  looks to be a great camp, but as it has the $+ in the 'bible' we didn't even enquire about the price. Hence we've stayed at Shallow Inlet and took a day trip in. Tidal River would be very popular during the summer I'd say. It's a huge camp area.

Just as we were leaving the clouds and the rain came in, so at least we saw the magnificent granite mountains before the cloud covered them.

Tidal River very costly at any time of the year. But it is a magic spot to camp. They have some powered sites, as well as lots of "bushy" ones. Used to take my kids camping there over the Xmas school holidays, back in the tenting days. Even back then (80's-90's) we had to put in an application form by the middle of the year and then a ballot was held to decide who got in, even though there were a few hundred camp sites. Very popular. These days I would only go in non-school holiday time!

By the way - coastal places, like Lakes Entrance, could be a bit rowdy over the next week or two, due to the dreaded Schoolies invasion. Might be an idea to ask about that before you check in and pay your money!

Wasn't around when I went either.  From what I can see, it appears to be yet another import from America.  They've been doing it for years longer than "our" kids.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Heard the other day that Yr 12 girls were hiring a stretch limo to go to their formal. So some non-complying ones got a better idea and turned up on stick ponies. I thought that was a great idea. Stretched limo! Whatever next? Plus celebrity style dresses costing $1000s.

I went through all your photos on facebook Beth, great shots. Brings back a lot of memories.

When my cousin and I went there quite a few years ago we stayed at chalets just outside the gates. I suppose they were motel rooms but more like chalets. The owners property with only a few small buildings, with roaring fires in each one, beautifully done out.

Stretch limos have been around for years for the formals, I remember friends daughters arranging theirs a number of years ago, what with the expensive gowns, its all ridiculous. Schoolies week should be baned too.

Yep, sure is a great place Beth. I was one of many that helped evacuate heaps of kids from there during that flood. I think it was only the year before they had really bad fires (Black Saturday) there as well and that closed it down too. They have had a bad run really. As to the cost of sites it is around $50 per night in off peak during peak it's a disgrace but that's how it goes. They say at Xmas it works on a ballet system but the same people seem to get the same sites year after year as too on the Mornington Peninsula, works the same there with same results.

Love the Prom!! Camped in Tidal River can get a bit blowy - it is like a funnel - the wind blows in off the sea and straight up through the campground - you see people running round, holding onto tents and stuff - but what a spot - beautiful - even thought it is expensive.

Another place nearby is Bear Gully campground - hard to get in on weekends - but a terrific spot!

Thanks all. We didn't actually get wet Rosy, we just beat it! When we got back to camp, it hadn't rained there at all there.

Wendy, we'll certainly be watching for the schoolies. We were seated next to some at Inverloch when we were having fish & chips. They were behaving themselves. Just having 'normal fun'.

Schoolies has been around since my eldest (39) did Year 12. It was pretty mild then but it's really gotten out of hand in later years. The stretch limo has been the go for years too. When my daughter (33) did year 12, one of her friends arrived on a motorcycle and she was dressed in red leather! I believe she changed into a formal dress after arriving. As for her hair under a helmet, she had the most glorious red curly hair so there was no helmet hair for her!

Doug, good for you. It must have been terrifying for those 300 who had to be evacuated. We also noticed there'd been a fire in recent times too.

Jules, the 'bible' says Bear Gully is for small vehicles, but we did wonder about that.

This morning before leaving Shallow Inlet, I used the dump point there. It's like nothing I've seen anywhere else. It was a marine disposal thingy, all made of stainless steel. I wish I'd taken a photo of it now! biggrin

Marj, we saw a lot of signs for cottages in the area.

As you would have seen in the photos Marj, we came across and old man kangaroo eating at the side of the road. Poor old fella just couldn't care less that we were looking at him...just kept eating.

When we were there in July 2011, one of the caves had water in it and we were invited to swim in the crystal clear freezing cold water. Not for this little black duck! But two blokes did, and came out shivering! Brrr!
