I haven't been to a HB Cafe for yonks but I seem to recall back then that the order was taken at the table and served to the table. Maybe that's changed in recent times and now one has to order and collect at a counter like in some pub/club bistros.
Gday...
Yep, a VERY young, inexperienced kid comes and takes ya order - food, drinks etc - and they bring ya food and drinks to the table. On that score it is "table service". Unfortunately, there is more to what I would consider a "full table service restaurant" - especially if I was paying $24.50 for a plate with a bit of fish, salad and some curly chips.
I guess you and I have a vastly different idea of what I would expect for that price.
Cheers - John

No, still order at the table, usually taken by a pleasant young person who introduces herself, very helpful if you need to understand something on the menu - not a place I go to often, but enjoy it when I do, and pay the prices, after checking the menu..Often it is the alcoholic drinks which cost quite a lot at these places.
But, let me tell you - their huge bowl of rocky road, cream, chocolate syrup and ice cream is to die for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gee I think there are some folks on this forum that are that tight that if they were given a truss for Christmas they'd give themselves a hernia so they could wear it!
Parting with a dollar must be like having a tooth extracted without anaesthetic!

Goodun jimricho .... but I think it comes down to each person's perception of 'value for money' ... and when it comes to me tucker, I expect a fair bit of value.
In the case of the OP, I travel solo and my weekly grocery bill is less than what was paid for a bit of tucker and a cuppla drinks at Hog's Breath Cafe for one meal.
It's all what we perceive as 'value for money'.
cheers - John

I'm now slightly confused on the original post. Were they complaining about the price or were they complaining because they had no idea what the total bill was going to be. The 'caught out' statement makes me believe they had no idea how much their bill was going to be. And if that's the case then I'm slightly shocked one cannot have a rough idea of how much money they are spending. The fact they were confused reading the menu makes me believe they looked at the food on the next table and just said 'we'll take it' without properly reading a menu. I still don't understand what is so confusing about reading their menu.
-SNIPP- a nice meal in a full table service restaurant! -SNIP-
Gday...
I really doubt you could call the Hog's Breath Cafe franchise a "full table service restaurant" ..... La Porchetta is the same, as an example .... neither is a what I would expect to consider a "full table service restaurant".
I used the term "full table service" to distinguish it from bistro/cafeteria style service where one orders and pays in advance at a counter and sometimes also has to return to the counter to collect the meal.
It was only intended to be a descriptor not a comment on the quality of the service.
.........................lets just say i should have asked the price when we ordered won't be caught like that again.
Can we give these people a break ? They obviously don't go to restuarants very often and like many of the older generation on pensions who don't dine out regularly were not aware of current day prices in some food outlets.
In the statement above they have said they should have asked the price when they ordered, so have shown they accept reponsibility for ordering without checking the price first and admit it was their fault.
I read in another post on GN somewhere that one of them is undergoing a major operation soon so they obviously have a lot on their mind.
They make a simple thread in good faith about how surprised they were about prices in a restaurant and some come down on them like a ton of bricks. No wonder there are some GN members who are reluctant to post, I hope we don't become like another forum where some people are reluctant to post their thoughts for fear of being ridiculed.

Yep, have to agree Duh, points well made.
Not sure why people feel the need to ridicule or be confrontational in threads like this, the original poster expressed a valid opinion which may give others contemplating a visit to the restaurant in question an idea of what to expect in the food style, service, and price department.
That's it in a nutshell...only not quite how you're seeing it. Whilst her 'opinion' may be valid, the facts were not. The menu is NOT hard to read. It's NOT confusing. The prices are CLEARLY written next to each product. They were NOT 'caught' out or off guard by the price. For some bizarre reason they were not able to comprehend a piece of writing and it appears they are blaming the restaurant for their failed actions. And because of their failure to read, for whatever reason that is, they are posting negative thoughts on a restaurant that they clearly have written they enjoyed the food.

Wow - all this kerfuffle over a meal of fish and chips!!!!! Some people where we are camped here in Penguin, Tas, went for take away fish and chips the other night - two people, $44, though having said that, they did order half a dozen sea scallops - $2.50 ea probably, two pieces of fish, $6.50(?) - thats $28 before you add potato cakes, chips and whatever. Definitely not a cheap meal, fish and chips, any more.

Yes Jules has I stated in previous post Fish once was a cheap meal not no more much more costly than red meat , The old BBQ chicken is now the cheap treat , if we are are out and need to eat a chicken from Woolworts $10.98 and mixed prepacked salad $4 and 2 bead rolls $1.20. $17.18
On the menu today at Retro Betty's (licenced) at Innaloo Greater Union complex, WA, Barramundi fried fillet and some salad, $12.50, additional salad items extra.
Had to order and pay at the counter first, but given a number and waitress brought your order to the table.....
I eat quite a fish quite a bit Gerty, only because I find it cheaper. I get Blue Grenadier (Hoki) from the Deli in Woolies. One piece is never over 2.00. Try to have it 2 or 3 times a week when I am in my own kitchen. Or I buy a double breast of chicken from the Deli in Woolies, works out 5.00 - 6.00, I divide it in 4 and freeze it. Works out really cheap.

How on earth could 2 people eat that much in one meal Jules. If I bought Fish and Chips, it would be one piece of fish and half a dozen chips.
Some people must eat huge meals they don't really need.
Took my wife out the other night in Broome for fish and chips, We both had barra and chips and I had salad with mine, along with a couple of coffees. The bill was $58. I will go back againas it was the best feed of fish and chips since leaving tassie and the salad was to die for. cheers blaze ps with the original post on hogs breath, I find it very hard to read the menues in the dimmly lit cafe
Can sombody pleasse tell me why Atlantic salmon, farmed bout 300mtrs. from where we were camped here in tassie,is on ''special'' for $28kg??? We pay that at home in perth !
Best fish and chips ever had - no question - Wyndham Pub in WA - $10 - huge piece of barra and chips, bit of greens stuff for decoration!!!!!! Yum - can taste it now!!!!!!

Most weekends for us start with Saturday morning browsing the garage sales first & maybe one of the flea markets then grocery shopping at Grafton Shoppingworld and finish it off with $5 fish & chips from the seafood place in the same complex next to Coles($5 only on Saturdays I think). Bloody good meal, not over battered and cooked just right. For that special treat they also have sweet potato scallops (sweet potato cakes for you interstaters).
Cheers
Jon

I think from this post we could say Fish and Chips is a meal which everybody likes
My wife and I enjoy fish and chips.
Only a couple of nights ago we were discussing the fact that the old corner fish and chip shop is pretty much a thing of the past.
We have 3 or 4 shops in Moonta advertising F&C, none of em worth a tinkers curse, and this in an area that prides its self on being a prime fishing/seafood destination.
Oh i just read Duh's comment i too agree with that comment its a place to let people have there say and express how they feel about normal every day living ,good on you Duh also i must say i love the barra fish places to eat as long as they are salt water barra, i once had a fresh water barra in some restaurant many years ago and was like what is this, only to be told oh its fresh water barra, never made that mistake again.
gotta love the salt water fish, its so much more tastier than fresh water fish, and yes some will say depends on how its cooked but nope im a salt water fish gal from way back, used to the mullet whipped out of the ocean straight into a frypan while camped on the beach doing the mullet season.
