We purchased a Nav Man in June this year.  Were not happy when it turned itself off 3 times during peak hour in Sydney recently. It also had other problems like sometimes not being able to turn it off, and telling you the battery was going flat when it was plugged in. Took it back to JB earlier this week.

We have two Garmins & love them, purchased one top range unit 18mths back with life time free updates, aquired a second one with a few less functions 11mths back when we paid our roadside assistance for two yrs in one go.Couldn't complain about that & just recently loaded Camps 6 complete into them.

Lp0king at the 2595LMT with the 5" screen around $230. Saw on the Camps website you can buy the Points of Interest download for $19.95 I take it that nomads buy that as well.

Thanks

So the consensus is a Gamin 2595 LMT or Gamin Nuvi at least that gives us 2 suggestions

Lifetime maps means what exactly or don't they spell it out, maybe 5 years ??

I guess 5 years of use for up to $250 is considered reasonable value...I'm only assuming.

Nomad246 said Tom Tom but didn't say which, cheapest or top of range and how long do they seem to last.

I walk in and look at the range and walk out too many to choose and I don't know which is best, or even which is best for me.

Can I get maps for most of aus. I assume so but at what cost, or do they update as you drive from say Sydney to WA or Broome to Darwin or Sydney to Broken Hill, streets of Bathurst, or Orange or Stanley in Tasmania.

How to navigate to the ferry but maybe not so bad on a Sunday as less traffic, to get to Tasmania...love that place.

I will be travelling solo so this site is very important to my planning and I value the advice given, would think also be so to a lot of other folk travelling or wishing/planning to travel.

Cheers Robyn

I have been using a Garmin Nuvi for some 3 years now and find it excellent - it's much better than the very expensive GPS in my new Pajero, and much easier to use than a friends Tom Tom I had a play with recently. So, for me Garmin is definately the way to go David

I agree Robyn that picking the right model can be difficult. So you need to think about what features you need in your Garmin.. What size screen? 5" is good, but mine is a 3" inch and that has been ok Do you want it to provide hands free phone connection? My Nuvi does but I don't need it now Do you want the voice directions to come from the GPS direct? Or play through your car radio? Will you want to use your GPS when walking around or just in the car? Do you want your GPS to play mp3 music? When you decide what features you need, then go through the models till you find the one that suits - then go for it David

I would go for a Garmin or a Tomtom because it is easy to get POI for the camps book for them.
Use a Tomtom myself.
