just wondering if anyone can recommend a good free camping area along the Murray River between Yarrawonga and Tocumwal. we will be heading back to Echuca from Wodonga around the 17th December and wanted to spend a few quiet days camped along the river before the holiday madness starts.
Echuca only has Christies Beach which they say can be a haunt for hoons. I have never stayed there but others who have stay up by the gate to avoid any hassles. I would recommend Tocumwal before Christies.
Cobram Beach is a very big area - starts at Thomsons Beach and heads from there - some areas have long drops, some don't. Gets very busy long weekends, Easter and Christmas.

I stayed at Christies Beach for a few days a week or so ago. Is a nice quiet spot, No facilities but lots of good camp spots. Didnt have any trouble with hoons but I was there mid week.
Hi all, Christies Beach does have long drops, they are up the end towards the elbow in the river. We have stayed several times and it's a 50 /50 chance of encountering the hoons or ferals. Mid week we were ok but weekends seem to bring them out, luckily one encounter we had, they were sent packing by another camper with a quite loud shotgun at 3 in the morning. There are plenty of spots to camp in, just make sure there are no tree limbs above your camp as the redgums can break off unexpectedly. The speed boats can get a bit loud too. We have found Torrumbarry Weir a nice place to stay, it's about 20 minutes out of Echuca, has the weir to look at and plenty of camp areas either side of the weir plus there is a carvan park as well.
Hi, speaking of Turrumbarry Weir, if you were to turn right into Youngs Road (just before Turrumbarry roadhouse)and follow the road around past the dairy there are plenty of good campsites but not toilets. Hope this helps.
Living in the area and having spent a lot of time investigating places along the River, there are actually hundreds of spots. Depends on how rough you want to camp. An excellent start is the series of map books, Murray River Access by Spatial Vision. A book of strip maps that you can pick up from any of the tourist information joints along the river for around $5 each. You could spend a second lifetime finding great peaceful spots along the River. Sometimes embarassing when you find the right spot, sandy beach, one track in, nice fishing hole at the other end only to find that a bunch of sun worshippers move in and lay butt naked chanting some gobbledegook first thing in the morning as the sun rises! But I wouldn't let that put you off, a good belly laugh in the morning is good for you.
