Tariff Hike for Melbourne Cup W/End

I am in a CP on the Great Ocean Road at present.  When I rang to make a booking the lady informed me that tonight would be $34.  A bit more than I was hoping to pay, but my batteries need charging and I need a shower so said I would like to book in for two nights.  Imagine the stunned silence when the lady told me tomorrow night would be $72 (this is for one person) and that would be the tariff until after the Cup.  I said thanks I would just take the one night at $34 and be on my way tomorrow.  When I checked in, it was decided that perhaps they could do the two nights for $34 per night, so I agreed on the two nights.  (What the heck, I had just free camped at Lake Colac for 3 nights).

I understand these CP's have to make a living, but surely more than doubling the tariff is a bit over the top.confuse

Cheers!

Chris

Yep, you will find most of Vic will be like that Chris. Even though cup day is Tuesday, a lot of people take the Monday off as well turning it into a un-official extra long weekend so all accom take advantage and charge like it was Xmas or similar. I have booked into Kiama due to that weekend as a lot of people head out to the free camps as well. CROWDS.

Hi Doug

I will be free camping with friends for the rest of the weekend so it doesn't really worry me.  I was just stunned that they could increase the price that much.

Cheers!

Chris

I guess they can do what they like if people pay the higher price. Good on you for not doing so. Better $34 in the hand than $72 in fantasyland.

That is exploitation!!!!!! - Wonder if they had a three night minimum - like Easter has become five nights now (minimum).

I hope that people wake up to them and nobody stays there over the next days

There are quite a few vans and tenters coming in. Mostly on unpowered sites though.  Guess some people are happy to pay these inflated prices.  I suppose if it is just for a few nights once a year, it doesn't worry them.

Cheers!

Chris
