Just been to Walhalla (Vic)

What an amazing place!  It's an old gold mining town.  Fascinating place with a reasonable free camp that comes complete with lots of parrots, crimson rosellas and lots of other (less spectacular) birds.  Some great walks to do to - though they are very hilly.  It's deep in a valley so phones and internet are a tad problematic but the place is just so beautiful that you forgive it the hardships.

Used to camp in Walhalla years ago - did you get up to the old cemetary? And the mine?
Had some good times up there - lots of history, and a few days without telephone or internet, good for us all occasionally.

I live about 45 min from walhalla and have been visiting it for weekend since I was small. One of my most fav place on earth!!! So peaceful and quite. In fact we have booked the star hotel for a weekend for my partners 60th. It only has about 7 perminate residents and was the last place in Victoria to get mains power (about 5 years ago). It has a great pub, shops and historic buildings to visit and a steam train that runs weekend and holidays. The road up there is very slow going and narrow in spots but can be access by 40 sweater buses so is not to hard.

If traveling through gippsland it's a must see!!!
