The older D40s burn 10 -11 l/100km solo and 14 - 17 towing. The newer ones burn a little less. These are about the thirstiest of the twin cabs. However when selecting a particulat unit there is much more to consider than a couple of litres for every 100 km you travel. It's not a great deal if you end up with something you are not happy with just because you went for the most frugal. If you want the most frugal and you are not towing over 2,000 kg then you should be looking for a Mahindra or Great Wall.

We've been watching our fuel consumption very closely as we have a 2011 Ford Territiory diesel, especially as the ads say you can get 1000 kms out of a tank.
It varies- every driver is different, and then you get differences such as a/c on or off, cruise control on or off, wind strength and direction. Add to that your payload, the traffic and the what the road is like. Also, cruising speed impacts as well- anything over 90 and the economy goes down,
If I watch the fuel consumption screen, the instant usage varies with every small change.
I reckon to get the advertised 1000kms/tank of diesel we would a) be not towing b) not use a/c c) have one person only in the car and no luggage d) drive on a long flat country road, no hills and no traffic e) drive at 85-90 km/hr f) with a tail wind.
We have a late 2009 Pathfinder R51 2.5TD. Have just come back from a long weekend trip. Mostly freeway driving, no wind sat at 95k/h. Filled up when we left and reset fuel gauge to zero. On return have used three quarters of a tank at 9.6l/100. The van is a 22ft Windsor. I have had a chip fitted and there is a previous post a couple of pages back.

Gday...
I agree regarding trying to choose on fuel consumption - whether manufacturer stated, or from the wisdom and experience of other owners.
This is the fuel consumption, over the last eight tankfuls of my Landy Discovery 3 TDV6 Auto. Different fuel brands, different weather conditions, all on flat and pretty much straight outback NSW and QLD roads, all with the 2600kg van in tow and travelling usually at 90kph - except for roadworks, towns etc.
Overall, 14 ltr/100km is pretty good I reckon overall - but some tankfulls raise my liddle eyebrows when I fill it. Just buy the vehicle you want, best meets your needs and bank balance.
Cheers - John

My Nissan Navara ST Diesel with a lotus Track van fully off road on our last trip 5200 Klms averaged 14 Lts per 100 k's, average speed was 90 Klms per Hr My mates L/Rover with a simular van averaged 22 Lts per 100 k's, {not counting the oil he used or lost through leaks} but that is a Landie
