Hello everyone, We are planning our trip to WA and have a few questions. Is there any places between Darwin and Perth that are difficult to get accommodation either caravan parks or free camps? and what are the prices like for caravan parks with power? and what's the price of petrol today? thanks everyone and hope to see some Westies when we get there. kind regards. rocket n strop
Hullo best of luck we have just got home went right round had no trouble went from Katherine across Darwin and east coast next year anyway back to places to stay Victoria River CP lovely spot petrol it is a must to fill up here Timber Creek had no L P G so had to drive to Kunanurra a long way Stayed at kunnurra show grounds for a few days went to Lake Argyle Caravan Park $17 per person plus $7 eletricity per person so stayed where we were Then to leycesters rest area mary spool and ellendale rest areas all free camps make sure you have water Then Wilare Bridge Roadhouse for fuel and a couple wen into Broome no impressed Then the Gateway to Broome C P a new one 27 klms from Broome well worth the effort plenty of water fill your tanks Broome cost$50 a night you need miners rights to pay for it then refered to camps six for the rest of the trip hope this helps Mike
There is a lot of travel between those two spots..
we did it in 2010 and only had issues at Broome (managed to get a non powered site for a week) Port Headland (had to camp at the Golf course for two nights) and MonkeMyre (could only get in for a few nights). Such a big state, so many kilometers between towns. Where to start?
Take care if planning to free-camp near some towns, check with visitors centres and travellers who've been there re safety.
Theres no free-camping near or in Broome, and yes its expensive, but we stayed there for 3 days, just because it was such a long way to travel to get there, it would be stupid to waste the opportunity. A very very interesting place, lots to see and do, not much of it free, but hey we might never go there again so we made it worth while. We loved Derby, no free-camping there either, but a great place, very friendly people... if you can afford the Horizontal falls day-trip its fantastic. No free camping at Exmouth either and we loved that too, Mr D had a swim with the whale-sharks! Beautiful swimming spots all around that area of the Ningaloo Reef. Theres a NP there but we couldnt get in. Karijini is the BEST place! Its a National Park, so not free, but not expensive either. You need to bring everything you need, especially water.
In most of the rest-stops in WA and SA theres no toilets, and since it was the "busy season" the few that were there were mostly ponging to high heaven. An on-board loo is a good thing to have!
Enjoy, Rocket and Strop!!! Come back with a darker suntan than you ever had, and red dirt in places it will never come out of, and wonderful memories!
WA is the money state you need plenty of it to travel around and it doesnt get any cheaper when you get to perth the bigger your rig the more it will cost you a lot of places are know not letting buses and fifth wheeler rigs in, best bet talk to the locals good luck Red Dog
all the blogs are pre 2015 has anyone been to western Australia that could recommend good free or cheaper camps we are heading up to Darwin and then doing the west we are in Bairnsdale vic, it all seems so expensive
