GPS

I need a new GPS

I notice that the Garmin and VMS either have Camps 6 pre loaded or available as a download.

All I need to be able to do is plan a trip by putting waypoints on the map. Camps 6 pre loaded would mean I didn't have to do this, but does this facility warrant the cost over a cheaper GPS unit?

Any thoughts?

Grahame, you bet it does.

1. ease of setting up
2. ease of updating
3. usually free lifetime map updates
4. ease of use-intuitive input
5. warranty support
6. usually last longer

I have been both ways and wont go the cheapie way ever again

Which unit do you have?

I see that Aldi has a cheapie for $59.99 called 'Go Cruise'.  I've never heard that brand before but it looks reasonable.  smile

Currently we are using a TomTom about 4-years old without any updates, so we are considering getting another one.  Rather than uploading new data for it, we feel you might just as well get a new one.   confuse

I use a Garmin 1450T from DSE, it came with free lifetime map updates and the software to edit and upload custom POI's (like ozcamps etc) is free download.

I find it to be a good unit for the price. I would like to go with a HEMA navigator but cannot justify the price at the moment.

Not if the new one doesn't have the ability to update maps.

Do any of these GPSs have a "stay on main roads" or similar option. My Garmin sometimes would lead me (if I let it) up very minor and sometimes unmade back roads rather than sticking to the main road or highway regardless of whether it is set to fastest time or shortest distance.

From my research Navman has a unit aimed at not leading us oversize nomads on the not so straight and narrow. The description from their sales blurb is: 'Dust and vibration proof 5 MY Escape. Designed specifically for those who drive larger vehicles, 4WD, towing a caravan, boat or trailer with features like Large Vehicle Assist, 4WD Tracks, Lonely Planet Travel Guides and an AV-In Socket, this new sat nav is Navman's best GPS for safety and adventure'.

I too would like the Hema HN6 with Camps 6, dump points and all the goodies, but at close to $800 I'm going to have to come up with a serious strategy for making some extra money.

The Camps 6 POI file is available for Garmin and Tomtom (and maybe others) from the Camps website for (I think) $20.

I use Navman, which came with free updates for 3 years.

Other than when "she" was trying to make me do a U-turn at traffic lights in the middle of Melbourne, we have never had a cross word.

There is no Camps 6 download for Navman though.

SWMBO,has just bought a Garmin Nuvi 50 at JB HiFi for $88 normally $159 On special till the end of Sept.Just a basic model but it has a lifetime maps redemption for up to four map updates a year.

Might be of interest as you can get Camps six in Garmin Format around the $20 mark.

Cheers

Trevor

Navman have the "Oversize" add on download for My80t for $39 on special at the moment for 30% off if you register. I think its available for other units.
Also have Hemma off road maps for the same price.

I have a Garmin 2455 LM, which I use in the US,  has  4 free map updates per year for life. Does anyone know if the free map updates are applicable in Australia.

I have searched the Garmin website and asked a number retailers here in the US and I get differant answers.

PS The device has only US, Canada and Mexican maps loaded. So I would also need Austalian maps.
