Hi Ellice.. I asked the same question a year or so ago, and got some wonderfully interesting replies... theres some very crafty people on this forum! However I left the crochet at home, and did some sketching which led me into photography, and bird-watching/spotting. I'm now looking at buying a better camera to photograph birds, the blighters wont sit still long enough to focus my present camera. Would have liked to press wildflowers but the quarantine stops at state borders confiscate them.
We bush-walk a bit, bit not full-day walks anymore.
To just "veg out" we both read, and theres always a book exchange or op-shop to buy cheap fiction along the way.

Hi Ellice
What do you mean "not at the knitting stage"? I didn't realise there was a certain stage for it. I've been knitting since I was 7 years old, and mostly knit now for fetes and charity stalls. Next big trip I plan to do baby hats and vests which we drop into the local hospitals along the way.
I took up crochet in my late 20's - would have done it before that but I'm left handed and needed another leftie to teach me!
I used to do tapestry, but the frames are too big to carry in the van.
As Gerty said, photography is a great hobby, and there are lots of places to post your pics.
Mostly we do genealogy, and take an interest in things along the way such as war memorials, cemeteries, local family history centres etc. and as long as we have an internet connection, I am a happy little researcher most evenings as well!
Our next planned jaunt will be to Victoria to chase places on the family tree such as Axedale, Bendigo and the Bellarine Peninsula- and while we are there might take a drag down the great ocean road!
On my "bucket list", I want to learn fly fishing.

Not at the knitting stage, I've given up knitting which I did from a young age. Used to knit jumpers for the kids etc. Can't do it anymore as my fingers lock up. But I do crotchet, doesn't seem to affect my hands.
Othter hobbies when out on the road are photography, birdwatching. For when chilling out back at the van I have books full of puzzles, and books to read.

My hobby is patchwork. If you sew the pieces by hand you don't need a big area and you can move around when sitting outside to catch the sun (or the shade). I read on this forum quite recently someone suggesting a craft section. This would be great, anyone finding a good craft/patchwork shop could post the address so we could find the shop should we go through that particular town.

Painting with watercolours is easy, fun and relaxing. I have recently started myself with the help of a "how to paint with watercolours book". 10 little tubes of paint half a dozen little brushes and a small pad of watercolour paper and your away. You dont need an easel you have the paper flat for watercolours.

Thanks, for the answers, When i say not at the knitting state yet is , my nana taught me to knitt when i was very young, and im just not ready to take it up again as there must be lots of new things i can try and get pleasure out of as i did loose interest in knitting and i started making rugs, but there a bit large and bulky to carry in the van..There is no doubt i will find that something special as we have on been on the Road for 18mths and when we were camping for many years we had the children at home..  Ellice..

I bought the paints and brushes at various crazy clark type shops. You can of course by the more upmarket ones if you want. The how to book was lent to me by an artist friend, however I think you would find them in book shops or art shops. you could could also look up you tube movies on how to do watercolours. Some of the mastery is not so much about how to paint a flower for instance, but more about how to handle the paint and what it will and will not do on the paper. It is fun just playing with it and seeing what it will do.

I always take something along - I need to do something in the car to stay awake so when my hubby says' look at that' I can! So there is usually a knitted project like a baby rug or scarf for the car. It stays in the car. Then, I prepare embroidery blocks (for quilts) to do at night, I read, I do puzzles, I could also dabble in watercolours but even drawing on a sketch pad gves a lovely record of your trip. Lots of things to have a go trying. Have fun.

 Hi Ellice,

I do watercolour too and when you are just starting out get the cheap watercolours for sure.  Your brushes are what need to be pretty good quality.  In Big W that have a watercolour palette set for around the $10-11 mark and they are such lovely colours.  They are a good starting point.  I have all the good ones and the Caran de arche watercolour crayons which are very expensive but oh so lovely to use.  If and when you do take it up seriously then you start buying the more expensive supplies.  I do multi media artwork so I use all sorts of mediums for my work and I just love it.

When we started out on our first long trip, I took up Hardanger embroidery. I like the look and style of this, and it has the benefit of taking a long time to complete a piece.
While the vehicle is moving, I knit - because I can do this and keep an eye on the scenery as well. Like Ruth, I need to do that to keep awake. I knit dog coats for the local dog rescue service; also 1 foot squares, which they are able to sew together to whatever size they need.

Have been in a one spot the last 4 months so, I have been a bit crafty, making keyrings for bowel cancer awareness, all different colours, made of buttons, beads. I am a recycle person, and love to make things out of throwaway objects, have been masking out interesting coffee mugs from op shops, and painting chalk paint on front, . Have made batches of jewish rosemary salt favours, for selling at markets, and also christmas presents for when we hit melbourne. Love Pinterest on the internet. Wow have they got some fantastic ideas. A busy mind is a happy mind .

Hobbies really depend where we are going and how long we are staying. When we were travelling aroung Aus for 12 months I took cross stitch, crocheting and knitting. If we are heading to a spot and staying for a while I will take my embroidery machine and sew blocks for quilts. I also love cooking, so planning meals in the road with local produce is great. Love reading as well, have an ipad so buy novels for e reading. Gary and I are both into birdwatching in a big way, and bird photography. Love walking through the bush. We found it it is really great having an interest or hobby to plan your travels around. Now we are expecting our first grand child, knitting has been back on the agenda. Cheers Glenda

Hi Michelle, Can you tell me please what is  pinterest ?

It is a huge pin board and you create as many boards as you like and others can come along and go I like that and then repin to one of their boards.  It is full of everything crafty, arty, recipes, home decor, fashion, makeup, travel, collections of people, you name it there is probably someone with a board for it. and when you click on the link of something that you like it should take you to the original source whether that be someones blog, or internet site etc and that is where you will find directions etc for most of the crafty things.  Type into your searchbar pinterest.com and take a look.  Best of luck because you can spend hours on there just looking at all the gorgeousness!!! smilesmilesmilewink

 Hi Ellice,

yes you pin things you like and yes indeed you make your own boards, as many as you like for all different things and yes you have to have a user name whether that be your own name or a made up name etc.  It is addictive biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Brenda - I do patchwork as well (and embroidery and sometimes beading and sometimes knitting) - I am fully behind the craft section idea - and also the patchwork shop posting. Cheers, Helen
