Wondering if anybody has recently travelled the Turpentine Rd, between Nowra and Braidwood, if its OK would save a big drag up the Clyde. I understand it has been upgraded, but is it suitable for a caravan as well. Any advice would be appreciated.
We've travelled that road several times in the last couple of weeks Jenno, and its a good road. If you are going from Nerriga to Braidwood, theres about 15k's gravel road which is OK, just take care. We come through to Canberra, so we turn off and go through Tarago instead of Braidwood, theres only about 3 k's dirt road on that route and its shorter too.
It is definitely not as steep as the Clyde or Brown Mountain, and dont even think about Macquarie Pass with a caravan on!
Also if you take the Turpentine road shortcut to the Princes Highway to the south of Nowra, theres a few k's of gravel there.
Update.. we went over this road on the 13th October after rain and wind in the area, and the gravel section was quite a lot rougher. Wouldnt recommend it if towing a caravan. Today we travelled from Nowra to Canberra via Nerriga and Tarago and Bungendore... good road, no worries, except for 3km dirt road which was in good condition, and a low-level crossing over the Shoalhaven which has a 5 ton limit.
Thank you Gerty. I'd already decided that Nowra, Tarago, Goulburn was our most preferred return journey when we pick up our new caravan later this month. It's a relief to have my research confirmed by someone who has actually travelled it recently. Intend to stay at Berry showground for a few days to hopefully sort out any obvious warranty issues (sprinkler on roof for leaks, etc) and to visit Sandra's nephew at Fall's Creek, so may get to see you.

Watch your overall weight for the low-level crossing at Oallan, Darrell... 5 ton limit. Otherwise dont travel in the evenings, theres already too many dead wombats along that road. Good luck with your new van!
Weight will be well under the 5 tonne on maiden trip, Gertie (be a lot closer once I get the van home & load the combo ready for full time travel). I live in badger (wombat) country as well & definitely will not be on the road early morning or evening. Intend to basically begin as we intend to continue - only on the road for around 4 hours then camp up.

Just an update on the Nerriga Road to Nowra. Travelled this last week Tarago, Oallen Ford, Nerriga, sassafrass, Nowra. Wow! What a great road, a couple of steep bits, though nothing the Kombi couldnt handle. There is LESS THAN 1km of unsealed, graded road now on the Tarago side of Oallen Ford, that was all. I did this on a Sunday and every ACT motocyclist was out on their way to the Nerriga Pub for a Great Lunch.
I turned Right at the Greenwell point turnoff when travelling south to go out behind the west side of HMAS Albatross Aviation Park. I filled up with petrol 1 km down the Greenwell Point road first ( turned left). The next petrol -1 station and 2 pumps- 91 and diesel was at Tarago. Not far from nowra, but only a 40l tank. For vanners with a long tow, the dip out of Nerriga might scrape the tail. Wish there was a camp at Sassafrass as it is very cool and picturesque, Endrick River is quite OK, Loved the big on river camp at Corang River, Oallen was hot open dusty and dry. From 7pm to 7am I did not have a car pass the Corang River campsite. I certainly felt safe as you couldnt be seen from the road. Will be using MR 92 for snow trips in 2014, Wollongong to Canberra.
24km of dirt outside of Corang River to Braidwood- easier to go round to Tarago and miss Braidwood..

The Tianjarra falls is a lovely spot to pull off for a look and a picnic lunch, its on the coast side of Nerriga, and there was water in the falls last time we were there.
We usually turn off (at signpost to Tomerong) before Nowra and take the short-cut to the Princes Hway southbound... but that road has 14km dirt and is usually rough and corrugated, or just rough. Don't like that section, but when we took the long way it seemed to take forever!
