I am unable to ask Oscar given his current disposition . However, perhaps the subtlety is in the definition -

vul·ga'r - Crudely indecent. Deficient in taste, delicacy, or refinement. Marked by a lack of good breeding; boorish.
Perhaps 'proper society' is more likely to pursue titilating wicked activities rather than vulgar activities.
