Hi Kandagal.>> We've just got ourselves a Kindle and are learning too. . I believe when the Kindle is connected to a computer via the USB cable,it is in a "Charge" or "Download from the Computer ONLY"* mode and cannot operate. In other words, the WiFi connection (to search, buy or read books) is automatically turned off. You cannot shop or read whilst the USB cable is connected to the computer. If you want to shop or read, disconnect the USB cable (leaving it attached to the Kindle seems pointless- however, it may then act as an aerial.) Turn on the Kindle and press HOME (click the icon button just right of the centre button). For further advice, look for KINDLE USERS GUIDE in your Contents list. If you want to peruse or buy books, make sure the WiFi is turned back on. *If you want, you can also download books directly from your computer to the Kindle by connecting the USB to both Kindle and computer then SEND or COPY those titles from your computer to the Kindle file which will show in your computer under Documents when the two are connected.

You can load books onto your Kindle from a flash drive, disk or other media, via your computer. Turn on your computer. Connect and open the appropriate files,ie the ones containing the book titles you wish to copy... Connect your Kindle to the computer via the USB cable. Open both the Kindle file and Drive (books) file on your computer, preferably side by side. Click, hold and drag the titles to copy, from the Book files to the Kindle file. Allow a few seconds for each book to transfer across. There are other, faster, methods but you might be happy with this method.

"My biggest problem seems to be WiFi If my computer is connected by wireless modem does that mean we have a WiFi link. Sorry I'm so dense" You're NOT dense, just wise to ask. ALL modern computers have WiFi capability built in. A hidden antenna runs around the computer's screen. WiFi is short for Wireless Fidelity. This allows you to use your computer in a library, at McDonalds or elsewhere on their (often free) WiFi network. >> If you connect a modem to your computer, it's still WiFi as it doesn't use any wires to connect to the Internet,  it's a more powerful signal, but costlier, than using the built in WiFi. >>>> Your Kindle has it's own WiFi connection,a hidden aerial around the screen, separate and NOT part of any other computer. Your Kindle has a special programme called "Whispernet" which you can use to peruse the internet and buy books, etc. You do NOT have to use your computer. You do not pay for connecting. Being small though, this Whispernet WiFi programme may have connection problems in isolated places.

Well my Kindle Touch arrived but we are having all sorts of trouble setting it up.  Maybe someone who has done this successfully can help me.  When we plug the Kindle into USB it comes up with a message - If you want to read or shop on your Kindle while continuing to charge over USB please keep the USB cable attached but eject your Kindle from your computer -

What do I actually do to continue - Please any assistance would be appreciated

Hi Kandagal, I don't have that brand e reader but with mine I had a similar message at first. I fully charged the battery then re connected and all was ok after that. Not sure if that will help but worth a try.

Ordinarily the Kindle can't be used while connected to and charging via your computer, but no problem if charging via the Kindle's power adapter or you have Windows 7. If you are using Windows 7 then you can logically disconnect the Kindle (and any USB device) by clicking on the appropriate device icon in the taskbar/system tray (bottom right corner), in this case Kindle, and select "Eject Kindle". Alternatively you can click on your My Computer icon which will show you the main computer drive and everything currently attached to it. Find the drive letter where your Kindle is attached, right click on it, choose "eject'. Hope this helps.

Press the home button on Kindle and the top right hand corner should show whether wireless is on or off.  If off, to turn wireless on in Kindle press the menu button and a box will come up which includes "Turn wireless On".  I also endorse the procedure to eject the Kindle so it can be used when charging.  Simplest is go to My Computer, identify the device right click and select eject.

If all of the above fails then I suggest you go to a mcDonalds with your Kindle, sit down order a coffee and whatever and ask a student to help. I am sure that you will leave with the knowledge you require. Oh ask them to take it slow and its better that you do the key strokes while they instruct rather than they do it for you. I think all Mcdonalds have free wifi

Thats what I thought to but you need to buy a usb wireless router. With this you plug your usb into the router and then any wifi device can be used at once. Dlink make them. I know Dcomp and JB hifi have them in NSW. Im not sure if I put this right. It allows you to use you wireless connection anyplace you have reception.

My daughter took delivery of her touch kindle on thursday and ended up going to Mc donalds as they  have a hot spot at most of there stores and you do not need to go in just sit in the carpark. this enabled to register the unit and she seems to be ok now. we did not have the same problem with ours as it is the 3g unit and imports direct.

smile Thanks Crusing Granny for your compliments. Neil and Raine,I stand corrected if one needs to connect via USB to a router to access the Kindle shop.  We've just got a new Kindle,  maybe it's a later model. but we can get on to the Kindle Shop via the built in Whispernet.

(Don't forget you can also go to the Kindle Shop via your computer, download files (books) to your computer, then connect your Kindle to the computer and download from there. That way, you've got back-up files too.)

We're a couple of Kiwis touring Aust by caravan, in a series of six-nine month stages. Currently in Perth, but unfortunately we've gotta go fly to NZ today as my wife injured her wrist some time ago in NZ and it's getting worse.  We'll be back after Christmas hopefully,  but meantime keep an eye on the forum.   Safe Travels to all the friendly Aussies we've met, and those we've yet to meet.biggrin

How much does it cost and does it have the coverage of Telstra.

Connecting the Kindle directly on line (ie via Internet) to the Kindle Shop(ie Amazon Books) is free as far as I know. You then search their 'shop' and pay, by credit card, only for each 'book' which you download to that particular Kindle. But many older titles are free or very cheap, and most titles allow a chapter for free, to peruse and decide if you want to follow up by ordering the full book.

I doubt the Kindle Whispernet has "coverage." as Telstra does. As far as I know, my Kindle uses any available ISP (Internet Service Provider) such as Telstra, Vodafone, etc to connect to its website. This allows access to the Kindle shop/website. Kindle is little different from your computer in accessing the internet. The only difference is Kindle will allow access only to it's own website(s).

When downloading, Kindle books use a system (eg .exe) unreadable by most computer word processors (eg Office). After all, they don't want you opening and reading their books for free, and without buying a Kindle, do they? This system is readable only by a Kindle.

You can download free books from other sites as well as Amazon, via your own computer, but of course you're then paying your ISP for your contract, and those books could be unreadable on your computer. You can sometimes see the book's cover on your computer (as it's a jpg file) but any pages could be a gibbberish load of letters and symbols. The fault's not with your computer, but Kindle's programme files are made that way. Downloading them from your computer to the Kindle could make them readable. Always check first.

Go into my computer, see what drive your kindle is in  ( A B C D E F G etc) right click the drive and click on eject. Be carefull not to click format which is above eject. This is using windows XP.Good luck.

Oh there are lots of FREE sites for ebooks,Amazon is pretty good too just type in free ebooks in the Amazon site,if you find a book ( they are not all golden oldies either ) click on the download and add to your account. The ebook will be downloaded to your kindle if you have it plugged in and have wireless connected.Another program to get is Calibre. This program converts books for your kindle and has a library for all the book you have downloaded.

I have a large (5,000+) collection of ebooks (fiction and non-fiction) in mobi format. If you pm with what you like to read I might be able to get the book or books to you.
