were we ripped off or is this ok?

had a replacement airconditioner installed in our home. same brand, same place to put it - just out with the old and in with the new one. got a quote for $850 and told job will take half a day. job was completed in 2  1/2 hours by one man. not bad wages. do you think we were ripped off or is this an ok price?

Gday...

I think you know the answer if the quote of $850 was for labour only to remove and replace an air con ...... exhorbitant furious no confuse

Cheers - John

I Personally would not and did not accept any tradesman than quoted on that formula, I had a new split system fitted [ not a replacement ] got 4 quotes, 2 up around the $800 mark, 1 at around $670, Both were from larger companies,, finally got it fitted and plumbed by our local family type Plumber, for $585, and that included his electrician mate doing his bit,

I think you just have to shoparound, and don't go to the big companies with the big overheads.

Had a split system installed just prior to leaving for our trip up north our installation was organised by the company we purchased the unit from at a total cost of $560.00 which included
the removal of old unit
replace all piping for coolant Gas
renew electrical wiring
dispose of old unit

I think that your guy certainly made a substantial profit

The thing to do is do your homework FIRST.  You got a quote, did you get a second and third quote to compare?  Was this the cheapest quote?

No use accepting first (only) quote then complaining later.

We built and moved into a new house last year, we had 2 quotes to provide power to a shed including gpo's & lights.  One quote, $2,600.00, second quote $1850.00 including installing a split system a/c, powering it and gassing which I omitted to ask the first quoter for a price.

Cheers Neil

Don't forgrt if it required re-gassing (I presume it did), the cost of gas has become exhorbitant since July 1. Not saying that was the reason, but a distinct possibility.

There is no connection between what a fair price for labour and a fair profit should be, and the quotes tendered. Blame that on a number of contributing factors including replacement of permanent with casual employees, outsourcing (and flow-on effects for apprenticeship training), preference of tertiary education to skills, litigious people (increased cost of insurance and government regulation), the mining industry and so on.

All you can do is obtain a few quotes if they will provide them and take the best value for money package - which has to do with ensuring your installer will be there for the warranty year.

For comparison, ask a plumber how much it will be to run an electric eel through a drain, sit down first though.

It sounds like the price of the aircon + the installation on site. Did you have the aircon or did he bring it with him?
If you already had it, you were most certainly ripped off. Was it split system or wall unit?

I had a new split system a/c installed last summer. This one has an inverter. Supply and install $1200.
He had to come back to sort something out under warranty.

just installation. had another repairer and installer come out, charge $175 to tell me he could repair it but did not know for how much or he could replace it and he would get back to me with prices - 1 month ago, still waiting. five phone calls to other installers - 3 answering machines, no call back and the other two said around the same price and this one was the only one willing to come and give an onsite quote. all I can say is if this airconditioner breaks it will only get fixed if it is under warranty, after that I will be getting a portable unit and if something else breaks in the house it can stay that way and i will improvise.
