we are looking at visiting some friends in qld and then travelling down to broken hill and over to coober pedy and then down to adelaide ,can anyone tell us what the roads are like and if we can take the van along them from broken hill to coober pedy
John and Kay I'm not sure which way you are thinking of going from Broken Hill to Coober Pedy - there doesn't seem to be a direct route. Can you clarify so someone can help you?
we aregoing to come back through broken hill from qld and down to port augusta and up to coober pedy ,but we were wondering if the road from port augusta to coober pedy is ok for taking the van along it
Now you've explained the way you want to go, no, you'll have no problems just like Gerty Dancer says. There's a big freecamp 2km east of Peterborough that's popular. No toilets but it's only 2kms into town if you need one. It's a good distance from BH if you only want to drive for 1/2 day.
always a pleasure to chat and ask questions that I know will get some good info, soon I will have the time as well to work out this new fangled phone ,I discovered I'm not as behind the times as I thought lol!!!
The roads are all sealed and in reasonable condition. You may encounter quite a bit of heavy transport and oversize loads, but with all due care you will have a great trip. The crops are looking lush and today's rain should have everything growing strong. There is a series of narrow bridges between Broken Hill and Yunta, but once again, with due care all should be ok. The roadworks were completed a couple of weeks ago, repairing one of those narrow bridged after heavy rains a few months ago. There is a detour in B/Hill at the moment, but the alternatives are clearly sign-posted. If you want to take an interesting detour around Pt. Augusta you can go via Yorkey's Crossing to the Stuart Highway. Of course if you need to shop on the way through "the gutta" Yorkey's will be out of the way for you. Yorkey's is the heavy vehicle and over dimension route, but it's also an interesting view of that part of the world. It can be closed fairly quickly if it rains, but last week there was some very intense roadworks taking place to improve the rough stretch. Safe travels.
