we've just arrived at Toompine (free power, water and hot showers) came from great free camp at Eulo (yellow belly for dinner 3 nights in a row) headed to Quilpie tomorrow then to Longreach via Windorah Jundah Stonehenge. Probably take a week so will post a road report when we get to L/reach.

Hi John - the Eulo store looks a way off re-opening though the building looks nearly finished - I believe it's $15 for a powered site at the pub but we stayed on the river - fish only biting on river shrimp - (in case you are interested)
-will report road conditions in a week or so
cheers
Barry

We are at Quilpie now . ( Lake Houdraman ) . Came down from Longreach . The road from Longreach to Stonehenge is narrow . From Stonehenge to Windorah is wider . Narrow parts between Windorah and Quilpie again .
Not bad roads though , and sealed all the way .
Great campsite on the Thomson river 1km out of Jundah .

Heading to Normanton this week - 27 degrees!!!! in Ravenshoe at the moment - sunshine, light breeze, probably 24 degrees.
Love the area around Quilpie - ask the people at the caravan park about their opal claim, they let some people go and have a dig there - called Aces Wild I think.

Yep Jules, was through the area in 2010 - Eulo, Yowah (boulder opal fossicking), Toompine (opal fossicking) and Quilpie - opal fossicking, both in the van park (got some colour), out on the 'roadside spot' (got nuffin), and also their claim (bit of colour).
Loved the area - but the bore water at Quilpie is foul - strongest smelling and tasting water I have ever encountered.
Lake Houdraman was a pleasant place.
Cheers - John

I think Yowah has the worst smelling water anywhere - gives me a rash if I shower in it!!! Like Lake Houdraman - full of water lillies when we were there - few years ago now.
Done the opal fossicking bit - got some colour, not much, but was fun anyway.
Roadworks b/w Quilpie and Windorah but generally the road is sealed and pretty good, Windorah to Jundah the same (buy fuel at Windorah from the servo - 8c litre cheaper than from the general store next door)- we free camped just nth of Jundah on the Thompson for 2 nights - left there today then headed across to Isisford to camp at Oma waterhole for a couple of days - lookes like the road that continued onto Longreach from the Issisford turn off was sealed and good. We had 100 k's of dirt to Isisford, cut up and furrowed in places but quite OK for our Navara and raised Jayco outback - would be a bit rough for a conventional car and van
