There are very specific rules on where they are to be placed on your van.
From memory it is no less than 400mm from the ground, no more than 2000mm high and the left hand leading edge no more than 500mm from the left hand edge of the van.
It is on vehicles 7.5 metres and over.
There is also very specific requirements as to the types of Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle signs to be used and often many outlets sell the wrong ones.
Black letters on yellow retroreflective background.
The front reflective surface of the plate must bear the name of the manufacturer or agent.
When buying plates, make sure that this information is provided on each of them. Plates without this identification will not be accepted.
It also refers to 'plates' so I am not sure if stickers are also allowable....this is something you will need to check.

Just a query. We purchased a Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle sticker at the Brisbane C AND C Show. We have placed it on the left hand side of the van at the recommended distances. Was wondering do we need one on the right hand side of the van as well? Have kept the instructions in the glove box in case any probs
The short answer is No, Kaid. Only supposed to be one sticker on the Left-hand side. I'm surprised that caravans dont come with these stickers on them, since they are a requirement for vehicles over 7 meters long.
I check this out recently with the RTA, NSW. before fitting one.
There are verious types & sizes, the one which is the size of a number plate is adiquite, even for trucks.
The rule is that they are to be fitted to the left side only,& if the rig is over the required size, thats the sighn with the ( do not over take ) wording.
The long stick on ones that go right accross are wrong. As for the legal requirments, the sighn ONLY allows you to use additional lane area to make a LEFT HAND TURN. NOT RIGHT HAND TURN.
If you are caught using it for a right turn you can be fined. IF you are making a LEFT turn & some one tries to slip up the left side of you & hits your rig when you are displaying a sighn the you are in the right.
Have a look at the next semi that passes you, they have two reflective sighns fitted, only the left has the wording (do not overtake ) .Proving the rule.

Thank you all for your replies. The said sticker was purchased from a reputable organization and has the correct wording on it, instructions were followed to the tee. Did not realize that the sticker could only be used for left hand turn though. This forum never ceases to amaze me with all the information I have obtained.

With the sign fitted you are allowed to take up part of the left hand lane to do a RIGHT turn, if you take up part of the left lane without the sign they can book you, Rod
Further to my post above the following is from the Roads and Maritime site.
LONG VEHICLES ENTERING AND EXITING ROUNDABOUTS A vehicle may now enter and exit a roundabout in either lane or both lanes if all of the conditions below are adhered to:
The vehicle is 7.5 metres or longer (including any load or projections).
The vehicle displays a do not overtake turning vehicle sign.
The vehicle is within 50 metres of the nearest point of the roundabout.
It is not practical for the driver to leave the roundabout more than halfway around it from within the right lane or less than halfway around it from the left lane.
Drivers must give way to vehicles entering or exiting the roundabout that are in accordance with this rule.
My van doesn't have a space on the left side for the sign. The rear window takes up that space. I have the long one, cut in half and displayed in 2 lines on the right side, between the window and the van R side. I've never been picked up for this one, and don't expect to. Some trucks have the "Do not overtake....." sign on both sides of the trucks. I ought to know - I follow enough of them for a long time to notice. Some states have different conditions for displaying and using this sign. In some states it applies to the left AND right turn. There are times when undertaking a right turn where you will need to use part of both right turning lanes, not just at roundabouts. I think NSW is the strictest with this specification about displaying, size and use.

There are some different Regs in different States. In Victoria, the signs can be for Left or Right or both. The length here is 7 metres. If you put them on a shorter vehicle it is an infringement (Offence) yet can assist you in a civil claim (go figure). I only know this from my ex 'plod' days. (spanning 4 decades in VicPol) An interesting point; although the 'turning signs' relate to 7 metres (Vic) a vehicle of over 6 metres cannot park for more than one hour in a B.U.A. unless a permit (council or VicRoads) is obtained or posted signs allow it. Unfortunately, VicRoads have their own protocols which are from time to time at odds with the various Acts and Regs. We used to have arguements with them fairly regularly and their reply was usually similar to "We're the only shop in town". For what it's worth. P.S. Barooma's post re sizes and locations is pretty much exact (for Vic at least).

I tow a suzuki sierra behind my 25ft motor home, do I need to have a sign and should it be on the motor homeor on the suzi? would look pretty dum driving the suzi alone with it on,so I guess it would have to be removable when not on tow?

You could install or stick one on the motor home, and maybe a portable sign on the suzy when under tow.
There's more than one way to skin a cat. It's more about safety than anything else.
