Rip and Rosie I hope you are not serious in your criticism of anyone who has a needs to accept a helping hand in the later years of their live or when in trouble. I have worked hard all my life and have been ripped off by two females and the financial crash, we had to have and when I left work due to health issues I had to sell my home because i could not afford to keep it. The little I had left I had to use to live until I got involved in voluntary work and even that was cut off 3 months before reaching retirement age by an obnoxious centrelink employer because I had not done voluntary work the previous week even though I had spent most of the previous 3 months working full time for Blazeaid. I hope you never get into a situation where you need to go to centrelink as I see that you would not lower yourself to accept help whatever the situation so you might find it hard to survive. Remember that anyone's situation can change overnight so perhaps best to not gauge everyone by you high ideas. I have a little money in the bank and receive the age pension and I believe I have earnt the right. I feel that in the future there may be no government assistance as in many other countries and when you fall on bad times you beg in the street or lie down and die. I saw people injured during their employment and they were physically pulled from their position and ushered out the door to walk 4 kilometers to a bus and then tend to themselves and no guarantee of employment when and if recovered. perhaps that's the style of system you would like this country to have. I would expect also that if you had a problem on the road you would not accept assistance from others as I assume you are confident in all areas and you would be able to handle all situations on your own as you are a person who has not time for anyone in distress so I assume you also would not ask for any yourself. Regards Brian

God, I love holier than thou types. I presume you're a weekend caravan park warrior because I've not had the pleasure of encountering such intolerance among all the full time nomads met in our travels. Pity, I've always enjoyed telling such people numerous home truths. Perhaps something we can both look forward to.

No , I'm not criticising anyone who needs help.
I'm not criticising anyone who has the need of a helping hand, and if you read what I wrote you would see that.
In nothing I wrote did I deserve the personal insults you have levelled at me.
................................ it's not a great lifetime achievement to be sponsored by Centrelink. .................
Centrelink is a fall back position for those who can't manage by their own efforts. Its a sad thing in my book. Not a badge of pride to be plastered on a sticker.
Sad.
The only thing that is sad is your offensive comment.
When I was single and working hard for wages that weren't much more than the pension or the dole, I felt discriminated against and very resentful toward those who were getting pensions or discounts.
Now I'm entitled to a little help from Centrelink I'm very grateful for it, but certainly wouldn't put it on a sticker. That's like a slap to those who feel as I did.
And please, don't anybody get offended, I'm just saying how it is for me.
From the wording on the stickers that I've seen, those displaying them are having a laugh at themselves, nobody else, and that is fine with me, not that it matters.
I worked full time from the age of 14 until I retired and had no easy life, I am partly self funded but do get some Centrelink benefits, I don't really care what those still working think of me getting discounts or the benefits, they will mostly end up getting all or some of the benefits eventually themselves one day.
I remember a Dr saying to me once after I had retired that he was having to pay taxes for non working people like me, I reminded him that when I was working my taxes were helping put him through medical school. He didn't like that one bit.

Sue, my carer, is an ex American and confers with you. She relates when she worked there (1970's) Social Security lasted 6 mths. after working 3 years straight. After that, on your own. Yes, they give food vouchers for food only and not for soap, paper towels or toilet paper.
When I explained to her our pensions are paid for via our Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax, a carry over from a WW1 tax, she thought a great idea. A lot of people have to remember (as already pointed out) we baby boomers never had the chance of compulsory super.....I can remember AMP coming to me during my apprentiship offering retirement insurance thats all.
Anyway, lets thank God for the lucky country where we look after our people, and I collect my pension every fortnight without a craim knowing I paid for it when working.
