We camped in Gurrundalng area (one of two or three options)
We had a very happy couple of nights there last July..about 40ks from Kununurra and perhaps 30 or so to Lake Argyle van park. LA van park is a pay job but one of the best we've found. A must to visit and stay at least for a Lake cruise.

Agree with your comments FR re Lake Argyle CP, we stayed 2 nights there and did the cruise, a must, when we stayed at Kunnanurra Bill we stayed at the racecourse, a bit basic but did the job........worth a thought.
hey bill there are alot of places you can camp along the ord river, keep river, gibb river road etc.(Pentecost river). when living in Kununurra used to camp out nearly every weekend in the dry season, we would set up camp put the boat in get out on the water, never had a problem with anything going missing from camp or anything, not sure if that has changed?? If you call into the info centre they will give you a mud map to a few places you can go (well they used to anyway) but skull rock is a good spot, has boat ramp, long drop dunny but otherwise you have to be self sufficient, keep river is also another good spot as previously mentioned, I will check with my brother for you who still lives in Kununurra to check if there are any changes to places we used to camp, I do know some restrictions were put in place from some of the stations up that way after cattle were being shot etc depends how far out of town you want to be, no free camps in town, show grounds is probably your cheapest option but not sure of cost now. If your really keen a beautiful spot is Cape Domett, few hours from Kununurra, 4wd only but well worth the effort..
I stayed 2 nights at the showgrounds. Very hard to recommend this one! The location was pleasant enough but the site I was directed to was a nightmare. There was about 6 inches of dead leaves on the ground (great cover for Joe Blakes and other nasties) Caretaker was, to be generous , a lazy slob who stated that the mower had broken down. How hard to go to the council and ask for another mower or have the broken one repaired? Fees were the same as the local private caravan parks

We met a lady who lived and worked in Kunnanurra, who told us that Windham was a much safer town. We went to Wyndham,very interesting but honestly cant recommend it except for a day trip. Parry's farm was really lovely, not cheap but fantastic for bird watchers, not sure whether there'd be much fishing there. The caravan parks in K were busy and dear but we enjoyed the one by the lake, and felt secure there. Be careful free-camping in that area, as we were advised not to!
About 12km west of Kununurra on the way to Wyndham is a rest area where many travellers stay over-night. If you follow a track for 200m away from the highway from within this rest area, you will come to the Bat Cave. I reversed my van up there and stayed for a while. But it takes a bit of tenacity to get a caravan back there. It does wonders for your reversing skills.

Hi Clyde, will check that out later today, it's a bugga when there are not enough hours in a day, I don't know how I found the time to go to work all those years ago
I used to present seminars to groups of people, many of whom had retired and I can tell you, you are not alone. This seems to be the norm. "How on earth did I ever find time to go to work?!!"
